OSRS Defender of Varrock Guide: Requirements and Walkthrough — Bils Services

Defender of Varrock is the Experienced Mahjarrat backport about Zemouregal's undead push on the city. Medium length, 55 Smithing to start, and a red-mist dungeon that rewards a salve.

Overview

Defender of Varrock brings the Zemouregal invasion plot into Old School as a Mahjarrat-series Experienced quest. It is Medium length and asks for 55 Smithing before you can begin.

The heart of the quest is tracking the threat into an armoured-zombie dungeon where red mist bottles open gates. Multicombat undead with mixed styles make a salve amulet and Protect from Melee the default kit.

Combat recommendations sit around 65. You are not learning a raid boss here — you are clearing a story dungeon cleanly so later Mahjarrat quests do not sit behind unfinished backlog.

Requirements and Prerequisites

Skill and quest gates below are taken from the OSRS Wiki quest-details block for this quest. Boostability notes follow the Wiki markers — if a level is unboostable, train it before you start.

Items to Bring

Pack required items before the first travel segment. Recommended gear is comfort, not a hard gate, unless a fight forces a specific style.

Required

  • Chaos core (obtainable during the quest)
  • Barronite deposit or a pickaxe to mine one

Recommended

  • Combat 65
  • Ring of the elements or Lumberyard teleport
  • Mind Altar teleport or Lassar teleport
  • Multiple Varrock Teleports
  • 43 Prayer for Protect from Melee
  • Salve Amulet
  • Food and/or Prayer potions

Ultimate Ironmen should split heavy deliveries across trips where the Wiki notes that is allowed.

Where to Start

Starting location: Talk to Elias White in the Jolly Boar Inn.

Use the travel method that fits your unlocks — games necklace, fairy rings, spirit trees, carpets, or spellbook teleports — and keep a teleport out for deaths during combat sections.

Quest List blurb (paraphrased intent): Long ago, one man wielding a magic shield stood against the undead armies of the Mahjarrat. His name was Arrav, and he was strong and noble, but the fates had spoken: his downfall at the hands of the evil necromancer Zemouregal was inevitable. In one last desperate act to save hi…

Walkthrough, Stage by Stage

Numbered steps follow the Wiki quick-guide order, rewritten for BILS readers. Dialogue choices that gate progress are called out inline. For puzzle tiles or randomised layouts, use the dedicated puzzles section and the Wiki map if a step still feels unclear.

  1. Organised Zombies?. Speak with Elias White in the Jolly Boar Inn. (dialogue: Yes.)
  2. Inspect the plant outside the inn.
  3. Follow the trail west, and inspect the rocks.
  4. Follow the southern trail, and inspect the plant.
  5. Follow the eastern trail, and inspect the spiny bush to get a grubby key.
  6. Follow the eastern trail through the gate, and inspect the green bush.
  7. Follow the eastern trail, and inspect the small bush.
  8. Follow the northern trail, and run past the end to find a trapdoor.
  9. Upon entering the dungeon, finish the dialogue with Elias. (dialogue: Let's do it.)
  10. Run north a little bit to the end, then look east over the balcony.
  11. After the cutscene, run west and pick up three bottles.
  12. Defeat three armoured zombies and use a bottle on the red mist they leave behind.
  13. After getting three bottles of red mist, open the west door to find Arrav.
  14. Once Arrav leaves, head further north through the corridor.
  15. Defeat three additional armoured zombies and use a bottle on the red mist they leave behind. (Be sure to stop here if you're planning to kill zombies in the quest instance, going further will end the instance and put you with other players)
  16. Open the east door. Run further east a little bit to the end, then look south over the balcony.
  17. After the cutscene, leave the dungeon.
  18. The Sacred Forge. Speak to Elias at Varrock Palace and report your findings.
  19. After finishing speaking to Captain Rovin, head to the Ruins of Camdozaal
  20. Speak to Ramarno at the Sacred Forge and ask him about a shield. (dialogue: I need your help with a shield.) or (dialogue: I need your help with a shield.) or (dialogue: I need your help with a shield.) depending on previous quests (If he is not at the Forge, you need to speak to him at the big door shortly after you enter the ruins).
  21. Use a chaos core on a barronite deposit
  22. Chaos cores are dropped by Chaos Golems in the south-eastern end in the ruins, at a rate of 2/15.
  23. Barronite deposits have a 24% chance of being obtained whilst mining barronite rocks at the Camdozaal Mines, just west of the Sacred Forge; a bronze pickaxe can be obtained from a nearby barrel.
  24. Use the imbued barronite on the Sacred Forge.
  25. The True Descendant. Head to the Varrock Palace.
  26. Speak to Captain Rovin two flights up the north-western staircase to receive the Shield of Arrav.
  27. Head to the Varrock Palace library and speak to Reldo.
  28. Search the scrolls by the flipped table in the north-east corner to obtain the list of elders.
  29. Read the List of elders and the Varrock Census west of the scrolls in the library.
  30. Speak to the following NPCs until one of them mentions the Fitzharmon family (Make sure to finish the dialogue or it will not register.):
  31. Aeonisig Raispher - Varrock Palace, throne room ( )
  32. King Roald - Varrock Palace, throne room ( )
  33. Sir Prysin - Varrock Palace, south-west ( )
  34. Romeo - Varrock Square ( )
  35. Horvik - In his Armour Shop ( )
  36. Curator Haig Halen - Varrock Museum ( )
  37. Head to south-east Varrock (you can use the Rat Pits (Varrock) minigame teleport), inside the gated area, and speak to Dimintheis. (dialogue: I need your help with the zombie invasion.)
  38. Watch the cutscene and finish the dialogue with Captain Rovin.

If a mid-quest fight sends you to your respawn, return with the same key items — several quests do not store progress for partially completed combat.

Puzzles and How They Work

Puzzle sections in modern quests are often randomised per account. The table below covers the puzzle types you should expect; exact tile solutions belong on the Wiki when they change per player.

Skip this section emotionally if the quest is combat-only — still skim for any mid-quest door puzzles.

Boss Fights

Combat encounters listed on the Wiki quest-details block. Death usually means a run-back with lost unprotected items outside safe instances — check each fight before you commit expensive gear.

Item-loss risk: standard death rules apply unless the quest instance is a safe minigame-style fight. Do not bring items you cannot afford to lose into dangerous multi-combat areas.

Common Mistakes and Warnings

Varrock's defender fails are usually mist logistics.

  • Trying to fill mist bottles before watching the required cutscene.
  • Praying the wrong style in multicombat when sword zombies dominate the room.
  • Taking the wrong wilderness/trail fork and missing the grubby key bush.
  • Showing up without 55 Smithing and wondering why the quest will not start.
  • Under-bringing inventory space when the dungeon expects multiple empty bottles.
  • Ignoring salve accuracy and turning a short clear into a supply sink.

Ironman Notes

Smithing 55 is unboostable at start — train it before you binge the story night.

Salve amulet pays for itself immediately in the zombie rooms.

Keep Varrock teleports ready; the quest hops districts more than it looks on the map.

FAQ

Is this required for While Guthix Sleeps?

It sits on the Mahjarrat prerequisite web — check WGS requirements and finish this early.

How hard is the combat?

Armoured zombies are manageable with prayer and a salve; it is denser than it is mechanically deep.

Can I boost 55 Smithing?

No for the start check.

Is Arrav involved?

Yes — the undead leadership beat is part of the Zemouregal invasion story.

How long does it take?

Medium, unless you mis-route the trail and mist sections.

Bottom Line

Bank the Smithing requirement, bring a salve, and treat red mist as the dungeon currency.

Worth knocking out on any account aiming at later Mahjarrat grandmasters.
