OSRS A Kingdom Divided Guide: Requirements and Walkthrough

A Kingdom Divided closes the Kourend council arc and unlocks the stronger Arceuus toolkit. Long travel loops, two real fights, and the items people forget before Xeric's Lookout.
Overview
A Kingdom Divided is Experienced difficulty and Long — not because of a single brutal boss, but because Kourend makes you cross the kingdom repeatedly while the plot tightens around the council and Rose.
Combat spikes at the Judge of Yama and Xamphur. Yama forces melee through double overhead protection and fire-wave dodging; Xamphur is a magic-pray fight with hand spawns that punish standing still.
The payoff is account infrastructure: thralls and the wider Arceuus endgame package sit behind this quest. If you boss seriously, this is progression, not optional lore.

Recommended

Ultimate Ironmen should split heavy deliveries across trips where the Wiki notes that is allowed.
Where to Start
Starting location: Talk to Martin Holt at the entrance to Kourend Castle in Kingstown.
Use the travel method that fits your unlocks — games necklace, fairy rings, spirit trees, carpets, or spellbook teleports — and keep a teleport out for deaths during combat sections.
Quest List blurb (paraphrased intent): Great Kourend: a land of wealth, comfort and security. Across its five cities, the people of this Kingdom work to bring peace and prosperity. However, all is not as it seems. Beneath this delicate façade lies an uncomfortable truth: the kingdom of Great Kourend is A Kingdom Divid…
Walkthrough, Stage by Stage
Numbered steps follow the Wiki quick-guide order, rewritten for BILS readers. Dialogue choices that gate progress are called out inline. For puzzle tiles or randomised layouts, use the dedicated puzzles section and the Wiki map if a step still feels unclear.
- The Disgraced Councillor's Escape. Go speak to Martin Holt east of the Kourend Castle and start the quest. (dialogue: Yes.)
- Travel to the ground floor of the Kourend Castle and speak to Commander Fullore. A short cutscene will occur. (dialogue: Let's get going.)
- Once the cutscene is over, you will be south of a little house that you will need to investigate.
- Go in the house, go up the stairs, and search the drawers in the eastern room. Read the receipt.
- Go down the stairs and talk to Tomas Lawry by the roses (dialogue: ).
- Travel to the Lovakengj pub north-west of the Kourend Castle and speak to Fuggy. (dialogue: Had any councillors stay here recently?)
- Travel to Veos's boat in the south-eastern corner of Port Piscarilius and talk to Cabin Boy Herbert close to the quest and travel marker. (dialogue: I'm looking for a councillor.) A short cutscene will occur.
- Combat will immediately follow the cutscene.
- After the cutscene you will need to defeat the level 168 demon Judge of Yama. Dodge the fire waves like Galvek by standing away from the fire and running to the boss to melee him. He will have protect from magic & protect from missiles overhead during the entire fight.
- A good tactic is to use protect from melee and dodge the flames until you get in melee range. Tanking the flames to get into melee range is also a viable option.
- After the boss has been killed a cutscene inside Kourend Castle will occur.
- Go south-west to speak to Commander Fullore outside of the castle after the cutscene. She will be standing just south of the castle, directly north of the Shayzien mine.
- Speak to Martin Holt again a bit east of Kourend Castle entrance where you started the quest.
- Head to the ground floor of the Arceuus Library and Right-click teleport on Archeio.
- Pickpocket Istoria for a Bluish key.
- Search the pink case in the south-east corner of the room to retrieve Rose's diary.
- Go back and speak to Martin Holt again with Rose's Diary. A note will fall out of the diary.
- Read the note and speak to Martin again.
- Kourend's Last Princess. Travel to the Forthos Ruins, north-east of Woodcutting guild.
- Speak to Martin Holt. (dialogue: I'll get searching.)
- Continue through the remaining mid-quest objectives in order (see the OSRS Wiki quick guide for the exact mid-section checklist if you get stuck).
- Speak with Martin Holt.
- Travel to the Graveyard of Heroes in Shayzien and go to the south of the church. Talk to Jorra (dialogue: Evil only triumphs when the good do nothing.) and kill the level 132 assassin that spawns (he attacks with melee and ranged). Speak to Jorra again to receive the declaration.
- Travel to the Arceuus church (get the dark essence block beforehand if you don't already have it), climb up either of the two staircases, run all the way east, climb the stairs, and then talk to Mori. Bring her molten glass and dark essence block. She will give you a dark nullifier.
- To obtain a dark essence block: bring a pickaxe and a chisel (chisel obtainable at the location) east of the Dark Altar. Chip off the dense runestone to receive a dense essence block, then use it on the Dark Altar to receive a dark essence block.
- Travel to the Chasm of Fire (north-west of fairy ring ). Try to go inside and complete the dialogue.
- Travel to the Hosidius Vinery (fairy ring ) and inspect the eastern Wine barrel (west of the fairy ring). Go inside (dialogue: Climb through it.) and picklock the chest to get a Shayzien journal.
- Go back to Xeric's Lookout and talk to all five of the lords.
- Talk with Commander Fullore. A cutscene will follow.
- Speak with Commander Fullore again.
- Go down the ladder and speak with Lord Hosidius.
- Return to Commander Fullore. There will be another long cutscene. (dialogue: Let's do this.)
- Finish the closing dialogue — the quest is complete.
If a mid-quest fight sends you to your respawn, return with the same key items — several quests do not store progress for partially completed combat.
Puzzles and How They Work
Puzzle sections in modern quests are often randomised per account. The table below covers the puzzle types you should expect; exact tile solutions belong on the Wiki when they change per player.
| Puzzle | Type | How it works |
|---|---|---|
| Light / mirror / beam puzzles | Spatial | Rotate emitters until the beam hits the target; reset if you over-rotate |
| Agility / pathing sections | Movement | Fail-safe by banking food; some obstacles drain run energy only |
| Dialogue / logic gates | Conversation | Pick the options listed in the walkthrough — wrong branches usually loop safely |
| Combat puzzles | Fight | Correct prayer or attack style matters more than DPS |

Skip this section emotionally if the quest is combat-only — still skim for any mid-quest door puzzles.
Boss Fights
Combat encounters listed on the Wiki quest-details block. Death usually means a run-back with lost unprotected items outside safe instances — check each fight before you commit expensive gear.

Item-loss risk: standard death rules apply unless the quest instance is a safe minigame-style fight. Do not bring items you cannot afford to lose into dangerous multi-combat areas.

Common Mistakes and Warnings
Kingdom Divided failures are usually inventory and house-hopping mistakes.
- Starting Judge of Yama on ranged or magic — his overheads make melee the intended answer.
- Forgetting a fire bolt-or-better rune pouch for the Settlement Ruins ice chunks.
- Mining volcanic sulphur without a face covering and eating avoidable damage.
- Showing up to Mori without molten glass and a dark essence block ready.
- Skipping Kharedst's memoirs or Xeric's talisman and turning every lord visit into a ten-minute run.
- Misreading the Forthos panel code and looping stone piles twice.
- Arriving at the final lookout sequence without the broken redirector from Lord Arceuus.
Ironman Notes
Dark essence blocks need a pickaxe and Dark Altar trip — do this before the Mori step, not after a failed dialogue.
Defence potion plus volcanic sulphur for the shielding potion is easy to under-prepare; keep a spare defence pot.
Lizardman egg and Molch key loop is short if you already know the swamp path; first-timers should bring antipoisons.
FAQ
Why is this quest mandatory for PvM accounts?
It unlocks thralls and major Arceuus spell upgrades used across modern bossing.
How hard is Judge of Yama?
Mechanically fair if you melee and respect the fire waves. It feels worse if you try to out-range the overheads.
Do I need high combat?
Around 70 combat is the comfortable band. Lower works with prayer and patience on Xamphur.
Is Client of Kourend enough as a prereq?
You need the full Kourend quest chain prerequisites listed on the wiki — do not start mid-arc.
Can I boost the skill requirements?
Check each skill on the wiki page; several earlier Kourend quests already forced the awkward levels.

Bottom Line
Block a long session, pre-load Kourend teleports, and treat Yama and Xamphur as the only true gear checks.
If thralls are the only reason you are here, quest services can clear the council arc without the travel tax.
