OSRS Herblore Guide 1–99: Costs, Potions and Training Methods

Herblore 1–99 guide with GE cost planning, best potions to make, attack/super/saradomin brew paths, and cheap vs fast XP trade-offs.
Why Herblore 1–99 Still Matters
Bils Services offers hand-done Herblore training if you would rather outsource the grind. This article stays educational first — use the service link only if it fits your plan.
We have not put XP per hour or supply costs in this guide. Herblore rates move whenever Jagex adjusts a method, and the cost of the herblore supplies below moves with the Grand Exchange — a frozen number here would mislead you into budgeting the wrong bank. The OSRS Wiki carries live figures.

Herblore 1–99 Level Path
Herblore breaks into 5 stages between level 1 and 99. Start at "1–3: Druidic Ritual" and read the list as a default rather than a rule — if your goal is costs rather than methods, the later stages are where you should deviate.
- 1–3: Druidic Ritual
- Low: attack potions / guam paths
- Mid: prayer potions / super energies depending on prices
- High: super combats / saradomin brews / extended potions for XP
- Always: clean herbs efficiently; do not bottleneck on unfinished potions
The Two-Step Potion Chain and the One Piece of Equipment
Herblore is a two-step skill and most of the planning mistakes come from ignoring the first step. A clean herb goes into a vial of water to make an unfinished potion; a secondary ingredient then finishes it into three doses.
| Item | Role in the chain |
|---|---|
| Grimy herb | Must be cleaned before it can be used at all |
| Vial of water | Turns a clean herb into an unfinished potion |
| Secondary ingredient | Finishes the unfinished potion, producing three doses |
| Amulet of chemistry | Five charges. Each has a 5% chance of producing a four-dose potion instead of three, with no extra experience |

The amulet does nothing for potions that already always output four doses, which includes super combat potions, super antifire, antidote+ and antidote++, and the anti-venom+ line. Save the charges for the three-dose brews.
Because unfinished potions and cleaned herbs are both tradeable, you can split the grind: buy the step that is cheap this week and make the step that is expensive.
Fastest XP Methods
Highest XP/hour is usually the most expensive secondaries + herbs combo available at your level.
Bank standing organisation (herb → vial → secondary) matters as much as the recipe.
Amulet of chemistry can save secondaries on some potions — calculate if it helps your recipe.
Cheapest / Budget Approach
Herblore is a major cash sink. Build a budget from 1–99 before buying 20k herbs emotionally.
Cheap XP often means slower potions with better GP/XP.
Farming herb runs reduce cost dramatically for self-sufficient accounts.
AFK & Lower-Intensity Options
Herblore is bankstanding — low game risk, high attention for click speed.
Semi-AFK if you slow down; XP rates fall with your click rate.
Use while watching something; avoid mixing with high-stakes PvM the same hour if tired.
Practical Tips That Actually Matter
- Hard diaries and disease-free patches help the herb supply chain.
- Nightmare zone points / other secondaries can change recipes — check current metas.
- Making potions you will drink (brews, restores) softens the “burned GP” feeling.
Ironman Notes
Herblore is the clearest example of a skill that consumes rather than produces. Every potion needs a herb and a secondary, which means your real Herblore level is set by your Farming herb runs and by whatever drops your combat is producing. Irons who train Herblore first end up with a level they cannot use and no stock to use it on.
The practical order is herb patches unlocked and running, then cleaning and unfinished potions banked in bulk, then a single long Herblore session. Doing it that way also means you make the potions you actually need rather than whatever your current level allows.
When Paid Training Makes Sense
The case for buying Herblore rests on what it is blocking. The grind here is mostly a buying-and-clicking exercise, so there is very little you learn by doing it yourself. That makes it a reasonable thing to hand over — and a bad one to hand over before you have priced the materials, since those are usually the larger bill.
If you do order it, the thing to specify is the route as well as the level range: costs and potions and methods are different jobs on this skill, with different timelines and different supply bills for the same 99. Our Herblore page lists what we need from you, and the work is played rather than botted.
FAQ
Which potion to 99?
The one with the best GP/XP you can afford at each bracket — recalculate every few levels.
Should irons delay Herblore?
Not forever — raids and PvM demand potions. Herb runs are the real Herblore skill.
