OSRS Thieving Money Making Guide: Pickpocket Profit Paths

Thieving money making from early cash to high-level targets: setup, stun management, and how to calculate real profit when loot tables and seed prices shift.
Overview
Thieving money making rewards rhythm. The skill prints coins and seeds when you stay in the pocket long enough for averages to matter — and punishes anyone who banks every lucky loot as a rate.
For XP routes and method unlocks, use the Thieving 1–99 guide. This page focuses on treating Thieving as a GP engine: prep, process, costs and exit timing.
Ardougne diaries, dodgy necklaces and food choice change comfort more than they change the Wiki headline — factor your real fail rate.

Requirements
If you cannot stand next to the NPC without constant stun-deaths, you do not meet the soft requirement — train elsewhere first.
| Requirement | Detail |
|---|---|
| Thieving level | Target-specific. |
| Location access | Quest or area gates for some of the better NPCs and chests. |

Setup
Setup is food, necklaces and a world where you are not fighting five people for one NPC.
- Confirm the target on the Wiki money-making page at your level.
- Stack dodgy necklaces and food for a full session.
- Wear prayer or gear only if it helps survivability without killing inventory space.
- Park near a bank or note the nearest food source.
- Disable distracting plugins UI clutter if it slows your click rhythm.
Route and Process
Pickpocket → manage stun → bank seeds/coins → repeat. Blackjack and stall methods have their own click scripts — learn one cleanly.
- Warm up until your fail rate stabilises.
- Keep inventory rules simple (for example: bank when seeds hit a threshold).
- Replace necklaces before they hit zero mid-streak.
- Alch or drop trash according to a preset rule so you stop thinking.
- End on a timer and value the loot — do not "one more inventory" forever.
Costs to Subtract
Thieving costs are food, necklaces and the occasional teleport after a bad stun streak.
- Food or wine used while stunned
- Dodgy necklaces consumed
- Runes for optional spells
- GE tax on seed and loot sales
- Death costs only if you insist on dangerous area Thieving
How to Calculate Realistic Profit
Seeds dominate many Thieving money methods — price them every session.
- Note starting necklaces and food count.
- Thieve for a fixed time at your real click rate.
- Value coins + seeds + other loot at conservative GE prices.
- Subtract consumables used.
- Compare to Wiki; if seeds crashed overnight, believe your ledger.
Ironman Relevance
Thieving is a seed and resource printer for irons. GP is secondary to Farming inputs.
Prioritise targets that drop what your patches need.
Common Mistakes
Clicking faster than you can recover from stuns is not efficiency.
- Banking every small loot pile and destroying XP/GP rhythm
- Using expensive food when cheaper options keep you up
- Wilderness Thieving without a risk plan
- Ignoring diary unlocks that affect your chosen method
- Skipping the Thieving 1–99 guide and learning on a terrible target
When to Move On
Exit conditions matter as much as the method itself. Switch when one of these is true:
- Seed prices make your timed session worse than a gather skill you like more.
- You have unlocked a higher target and verified it pays after costs.
- You need AFK more than GP — switch to AFK activities or a passive stack.
FAQ
Is Thieving better XP or money?
It can be both depending on method and prices. Decide which you are optimising before you start the hour.
Do I need 99 Thieving for money?
No. Many money targets sit well below cape level. Check unlocks for your account.
Are elves still the answer?
Only if your level, crystal impling side grades and live loot values say so after a timed test — verify on the Wiki.
Can I AFK Thieving?
Some methods are lower intensity than others, but classic pickpocketing wants attention. Do not expect true AFK peak rates.

Bottom Line
Thieving money is consumable cost versus seed and coin output over a timed streak. Keep necklaces stocked and prices honest.
