OSRS Birdhouse Runs Money Making Guide — Bils Services

Birdhouse runs for passive OSRS GP and Hunter XP: Fossil Island setup, seed costs, nest habits, and how to calculate profit without fake hourly charts.

Overview

Birdhouse runs are the Hunter version of a phone timer: short visits on Fossil Island that drip nests, seeds and XP while you do something else with your day.

They appear in the low-level money guide as a starter engine. This page is the dedicated money routine - complementary, not a rewrite of that overview or the full Hunter 1-99 guide.

Nest prices and seed costs decide whether a run is "free XP" or real GP. Check them; do not recite a year-old screenshot.

Setup

Setup is four houses worth of materials in the bank and a teleport muscle memory.

  1. Confirm Bone Voyage is done and you can reach Fossil Island quickly.
  2. Craft or buy the birdhouse tier you will actually use for a week.
  3. Bag seeds in a bank tab sized for several runs.
  4. Map the island route once; never reinvent it mid-run.
  5. Set a real-world timer (~50 minutes) so runs actually happen.

Route and Process

Teleport in, empty houses, rebuild, fill seeds, leave. Anything more complicated is you inventing chores.

  1. Arrive with empty inventory spaces for nests and loot.
  2. Disassemble and loot each house in a fixed order.
  3. Build the next house tier you brought and fill with seeds.
  4. Bank nests when the run ends - do not leave them for "later tonight."
  5. Start the timer again before you open another piece of content.

Costs to Subtract

Birdhouse costs are seeds and the houses themselves. Nest income has to clear both.

  • Birdhouse packs or crafted house materials
  • Seeds used per house
  • Teleport charges
  • GE tax if you sell nests/seeds
  • Time only if you turn a two-minute run into a twenty-minute island tour

How to Calculate Realistic Profit

Profit per day = nest and loot value - seeds - houses, across the runs you actually completed.

  1. Track nests and notable loot across a full day of completed runs.
  2. Value them at conservative GE prices.
  3. Subtract seeds and replacement houses.
  4. Divide by real minutes spent running (usually tiny) if you need an hourly comparison - or just judge daily GP.
  5. Cross-check Wiki bird nest and seed prices whenever farming metas shift.

Ironman Relevance

Birdhouses are non-negotiable early iron Hunter and nest progress. Treat GP as optional flavour.

See ironman money making for how passives fit the wider plan.

Common Mistakes

Missing runs because you "will do three later" is the only way birdhouses fail.

  • Showing up without seeds
  • Upgrading house tiers before you will use the higher seed costs efficiently
  • Letting nests stack in the bank unprocessed for months
  • Skipping Bone Voyage because the quest feels skippable
  • Comparing birdhouse "GP/hour" to bossing without noting the minutes actually played

When to Move On

Exit conditions matter as much as the method itself. Switch when one of these is true:

  • You never click the timer - automate the habit or drop the method honestly.
  • Seed costs exceed nest income for a sustained period after price checks.
  • Your Hunter goals move to rumours or chins as the active focus - keep birdhouses as passive anyway unless costs break.

FAQ

How often should I do birdhouse runs?

Whenever the houses are ready. Missing cycles is missing free progress - the Wiki lists exact timings for your house type.

What seeds should I use?

Cheap seeds that still fill the house. Recheck GE prices; the "best" seed changes.

Do birdhouses work on iron?

Yes - they are one of the best early iron Hunter loops.

Are birdhouses better than herb runs?

Different timers and outputs. Many accounts should do both - see herb runs and passive income.

Bottom Line

Birdhouses pay when you actually run the timer. Keep seeds stocked, bank nests immediately, and re-check seed versus nest prices.

Pair with herb runs and Miscellania for a full passive stack.
