OSRS Ironman Money Making Guide: GP and Account Value — Bils Services

Ironman money making without main-account advice: what "GP" means on an iron, which loops fund the account, and when to gather instead of chase coins.

Overview

On an iron, coins are only useful when a shop, coffin or fee demands them. Most "money making" is really account-value making: herbs, runes, ammo, bars and boss unique progress.

This guide does not pretend iron rates match main GE metas. It sorts loops by what they unlock for the account, and points you at skill and quest guides for the grinds themselves.

If you are a main, the money making hub is the better starting point. Stay here when the Grand Exchange is not your supplier.

Requirements

Iron money methods inherit every gather requirement mains skip by buying the output. Plan the supply chain, not just the final click.

Setup

Iron setup is seed boxes, rune storage and a weekly routine more than a DPS gear swap.

  1. List the next three account upgrades that actually need GP or shop currencies.
  2. Assign a daily/weekly passive stack (birdhouses, herbs, seaweed, Miscellania).
  3. Pick one active gather or PvM loop that feeds those upgrades.
  4. Bank organisers or tabs for raw materials so you stop losing mats in clutter.
  5. For GIM, agree who produces which bottleneck before you duplicate grinds.

Route and Process

Process on iron is a production line. Coins are a side effect until a shop says otherwise.

  1. Clear passive timers first so they never pile into a guilt mountain.
  2. Run the active loop in blocks that also train a skill you need anyway.
  3. Process raw materials on a schedule (herbs, ores, hides) instead of hoarding forever.
  4. Spend shop GP deliberately — impulse buys on irons hurt more.
  5. Re-evaluate when a new quest or diary collapses a supply bottleneck.

Costs to Subtract

Iron costs are time and resources, not GE stickers — but shop prices still matter.

  • Seeds, compost and farming teleports for herb/tree loops
  • Food and potions you had to gather or make yourself
  • Death costs and limited rebuy options on HCIM
  • Shop markups when you finally spend coins
  • Opportunity cost of gathering something the account does not need yet

How to Calculate Realistic Profit

Measure iron progress in upgrades unlocked per week, not in imaginary GE GP/hour.

  1. Define the upgrade (for example: "50 Saradomin brews banked" or "enough GP for a shop item").
  2. Track hours spent on the loops that feed that upgrade.
  3. If you must compare to mains, value outputs at Wiki GE prices for curiosity only — do not let that number steer a bad gather.
  4. Prefer methods that dual-purpose XP and supplies.
  5. When a main guide quotes GP/hour, translate it to "items per hour you can actually use."

Ironman Relevance

You are already the audience. Hardcore: bias safer loops and never bring irreplaceable gear into teachable deaths.

Ultimate: inventory value and alchables dominate — specialised money guides for UIM need even stricter bank thinking.

Common Mistakes

Copying main money makers without the supply chain is the fastest way to stall an iron.

  • Chasing alch value while your Herblore or Construction is starved
  • Skipping birdhouses and Miscellania because they feel "small"
  • Bossing for uniques with no food pipeline
  • Treating the GE price of a drop as iron profit
  • Ignoring ironman gathering fundamentals

When to Move On

Exit conditions matter as much as the method itself. Switch when one of these is true:

  • The next upgrade is gated by a quest or skill, not by coins — switch guides.
  • Your passive stacks overflow while combat gear is stuck; rebalance time.
  • You convert to a main (or vice versa) — restart from the hub with the new rules.

FAQ

How do irons make money fast?

They do not, in the main sense. They accelerate account value. Passive stacks plus Slayer is the usual backbone — verify specifics on the Wiki for your stage.

Should irons flip?

No GE merchanting. Shop and death coffer planning replace flipping.

Is Vorkath good on iron?

As a supplies and head grind, often yes once unlocked — see the Vorkath guide. Do not treat it as main GP/hour.

Where should I read next?

Ironman equipment progression for gear goals; skill money guides for specific gather engines.

Bottom Line

Iron money making is supply-chain design. Coins matter when shops say so; everything else is materials and unlocks.

Build passives first, then an active loop that feeds the next real upgrade.
