OSRS Vorkath Guide: Requirements, Gear, Inventory and Every Special

A real Vorkath guide: Dragon Slayer II access, why extended super antifire is non-negotiable, all six specials with the correct response, budget through best-in-slot ranged setups, and the drops worth the trip.
Overview
Vorkath is the undead dragon on Ungael and the boss most mains learn immediately after Dragon Slayer II. He is popular for a reason: the fight is completely scripted. Vorkath does not have random attack patterns, so once you learn the six specials and their responses, kills become repeatable rather than lucky.
That scripted design is also why Vorkath is the best teacher in the game for solo PvM. Nothing here punishes you for being slow — it punishes you for not knowing what is coming. If you can read the animation, you can survive it.
This guide covers the access gate, the antifire rules that cause most early deaths, gear at three budgets, the full special list with the correct response for each, and what to do when a kill goes wrong mid-fight.

Requirements and Access
Vorkath has exactly one hard gate, but two soft gates that people mistake for optional. Skipping either of the soft gates is how new killers die on their first three attempts.
| Requirement | Detail |
|---|---|
| Dragon Slayer II | The only quest requirement. You cannot reach the Vorkath arena without it. |
| Antifire protection | Extended super antifire is the practical standard. Without proper antifire, Vorkath's dragonfire does severe damage even through Protect from Magic. |
| Anti-dragon shield or dragonfire ward | Stacks with antifire potions. A dragonfire ward or shield is the safe default while learning. |
| Crumble Undead | Requires 39 Magic and the standard spellbook. Used to instantly kill the Zombified Spawn special. |
| 43 Prayer | For Protect from Magic. Rigour or Eagle Eye on top is a damage upgrade, not a requirement. |

Vorkath is undead, so Crumble Undead is unusually strong against the spawn he summons. Bring the runes even if you never cast anything else.
If you have not finished Dragon Slayer II yet, the Dragon Slayer II walkthrough covers the requirements and boss fights on the way.
Getting There
There are two practical routes to Ungael, and which one you use matters because Vorkath trips are short — travel time is a real share of your kills per hour.
- Use the Rellekka route: teleport to Rellekka, walk to the boat at the north-west dock, and sail to Ungael.
- Alternatively, use the Fremennik Isles or a house teleport plus the Lithkren route unlocked during Dragon Slayer II.
- From the Ungael landing point, run north to the ice arena and enter the instance.
Set your house teleport or a bank teleport as the return leg before your first trip, not after. Vorkath kills end with you low on supplies, and a slow bank run is the most common reason people stop after four kills instead of fourteen.
Recommended Stats
You can kill Vorkath below these stats, but deaths get common and trips get short. Treat the comfortable column as the point where the fight stops being scary.
| Stat | Comfortable | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Ranged | 80+ | Dragon hunter crossbow accuracy carries the fight; lower Ranged means longer kills and more supplies. |
| Hitpoints | 80+ | Vorkath's dragonfire and melee can burst you if you misstep during acid. |
| Defence | 70+ | Mainly for surviving mistakes rather than reducing normal damage. |
| Prayer | 43 minimum, 74+ preferred | Protect from Magic is mandatory; Rigour speeds kills noticeably. |
| Magic | 39+ | Only needed to cast Crumble Undead on the Zombified Spawn. |

Gear Setups: Budget, Mid and Best in Slot
Vorkath is a ranged fight for almost everyone. A Dragon hunter lance melee setup exists and is strong, but it demands better movement during the acid phase, so learn on ranged first.
The single largest upgrade is the Dragon hunter crossbow. Everything else on this table is a refinement.

A salve amulet (ei) is a strong alternative to anguish because Vorkath is undead — but only if you are attacking with the salve equipped for the whole fight.
Do not bring an expensive setup on your first ten kills. Learn the specials in gear you can afford to lose, then upgrade the bottleneck.
Inventory and Supplies
Vorkath punishes bad inventory management more than bad gear. The two items people forget are the antifire top-up and the Crumble Undead runes.
- Extended super antifire potions — enough to cover the whole trip, not just the first kill.
- Ranging potion or divine ranging potion.
- Prayer potions or super restores — super restores if you take stat drain from the spawn.
- Your food: sharks, anglerfish or saradomin brews depending on budget.
- Runes for Crumble Undead (earth and air) — or an equipped staff to cover one of the runes.
- A crossbow special-attack or spec weapon only if you already know the fight; skip it while learning.
- Teleport out: house tab, or your standard escape teleport.
- Anti-venom+ if you are not immune to venom from the poison special.
Bank early on your first trips. Ending a trip with one spare food is not efficiency, it is a death waiting for the next acid phase.
Mechanics You Have to Respect
Vorkath opens asleep. Your first attack wakes him, and he immediately breathes dragonfire — have antifire active and Protect from Magic on before you fire the first shot.
After the wake-up, Vorkath alternates normal attacks with a special roughly every six attacks. The specials come in a fixed order, so the fight is a memory test, not a reaction test.
| Mechanic | What it does | Correct response |
|---|---|---|
| Dragonfire | Heavy magic-based fire damage. Devastating without antifire. | Keep extended super antifire active and Protect from Magic on. Re-dose before it runs out, not after. |
| Zombified Spawn | Vorkath summons an undead spawn. If it reaches you and explodes it deals heavy damage and drains your stats and prayer. | Cast Crumble Undead on it immediately. This is the single most important response in the fight. |
| Acid pools | Vorkath floods the arena with acid and the safe tiles form a narrow winding path. | Walk the acid-free path continuously while attacking. Standing still in acid is the most common death cause. |
| Prayer-disabling ball | A purple projectile that switches your protection prayer off if it connects. | Sidestep one tile as it fires, then re-enable your prayer the moment it lands. |
| Ice / freeze breath | Freezes you in place and deals damage over the following ticks. | Move away from where you were standing; eat if you are already low before it lands. |
| Venom / poison attack | Applies venom, which escalates and can kill you through food. | Bring venom immunity (anti-venom+ or a serpentine helm) or cure it immediately. |
| Melee | Only used if you are standing adjacent to him. | Stay at range. There is no reason to be next to Vorkath on a ranged setup. |

Because the order is fixed, count your attacks. Most consistent killers do not react to animations at all — they know which special is next and pre-position for it.
The Kill, Step by Step
This is the loop that turns Vorkath into a routine. Run it identically every kill until it is muscle memory, then start optimising.
- Before entering: drink extended super antifire, activate Protect from Magic, and drink your ranging potion.
- Wake Vorkath with your first shot and immediately expect dragonfire. Do not panic-eat here; antifire is doing the work.
- Attack through the normal-attack window while tracking how many attacks have passed.
- When the Zombified Spawn appears, switch to Crumble Undead and kill it before it closes distance. Then switch back to your crossbow.
- When acid pools spread, start walking the safe path and keep attacking as you move. Accept the DPS loss; survival matters more.
- Sidestep the prayer-disabling ball, then verify your protection prayer is still on before continuing.
- Cure venom immediately if you are not immune. Do not try to out-eat it.
- Re-dose antifire on a timer, not when a warning appears. Running out mid-dragonfire is how good kills end badly.
- After the kill, check supplies honestly. If you cannot survive another full special cycle, bank.
If a kill goes wrong — antifire lapsed, prayer off, spawn exploded — leave. A single bad kill costs a few minutes; a stubborn death costs the whole trip.
Solo Versus Team
Vorkath is solo only. The arena is a private instance, so there is no team scaling, no shared loot and no way to bring a partner to cover mistakes.
That has a practical upside: nothing about your kill depends on someone else. Every improvement in your rate comes from your own routine — travel time, supply efficiency and how cleanly you handle acid and the spawn.
If you want a team boss with similar gear, the Nightmare is the natural next step, and the bosses index lists the rest by requirement.
Common Mistakes and What Actually Kills You
Almost every Vorkath death traces back to one of these. None of them are skill problems — they are routine problems.
- Letting extended super antifire lapse mid-fight. Dose on a schedule.
- Forgetting Crumble Undead runes, then trying to melee or range the Zombified Spawn down before it explodes.
- Standing still during the acid phase to squeeze in extra shots.
- Not re-enabling Protect from Magic after the prayer-disabling ball connects.
- Ignoring venom because your HP looks fine right now.
- Bringing a best-in-slot setup on kill one instead of kill twenty.
- Continuing a trip on two food and half a dose of antifire.
- Learning from a highlight clip rather than a full kill video — the clip skips the boring parts that keep you alive.
Drops Worth Knowing
Vorkath's value is a mix of one large unique table and a very consistent bulk drop. The bulk drop is why the boss stays worth killing even without uniques.
| Drop | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Superior dragon bones | The consistent bulk income and strong Prayer XP — see the Prayer 1–99 guide. |
| Vorkath's head | Used to make Ava's assembler, the best-in-slot ranged cape for most content. |
| Draconic visage | Combines into a dragonfire shield; one of the biggest single drops on the table. |
| Skeletal visage | Used for the ancient wyvern shield. |
| Dragon limbs and dragon bolts | Crossbow crafting materials and strong bolts. |
| Jar of decay | Collection log and clue-hunter demand. |
| Vorki | The pet. Purely a flex and a collection log entry. |

Combat Achievements
Vorkath has a full spread of Combat Achievement tasks, and most of them reward exactly the discipline this guide describes: handling the acid phase without taking damage, dealing with the spawn cleanly, and killing him under restrictions like limited food or no protection prayers.
Do not chase the restricted tasks until normal kills are boring. Attempting a no-food task while you still misread the acid path just burns supplies. Work through the Combat Achievements progression guide tier by tier instead.
Ironman Notes
Vorkath is one of the best mid-game Ironman bosses because the superior dragon bones solve Prayer, which is otherwise a brutal grind on an iron account.
You will not have a Dragon hunter crossbow when you first unlock him. An Armadyl crossbow or even a rune crossbow with broad bolts is enough — kills are slower, but the bones and visage chances are identical.
Stock antifire ingredients before you start a Vorkath grind. Running out of extended super antifire on an iron means stopping the grind to farm herbs, which is how these projects stall. The Ironman equipment progression guide covers where Vorkath fits in the wider order.
FAQ
Can I kill Vorkath without a Dragon hunter crossbow?
Yes. An Armadyl crossbow or a rune crossbow with diamond bolts (e) works fine — kills just take longer and cost more supplies. The DHCB is a rate upgrade, not an access requirement.
Is melee Vorkath better than ranged?
A Dragon hunter lance setup can be faster in the right hands, but it forces you to fight from melee distance during the acid phase, which is much harder to survive. Learn on ranged, switch later if you want to.
Do I really need extended super antifire?
Practically, yes. Regular antifire and prayer alone leave you taking serious damage from every dragonfire attack, which turns a clean fight into a food race you will lose.
What kills new Vorkath learners most often?
The acid phase and the Zombified Spawn, in that order. Both are avoidable with correct movement and Crumble Undead.
How many kills per hour should I expect?
That depends entirely on your gear, your bank route and how cleanly you handle specials, so any single number here would mislead you. Time ten of your own kills and use that.
Is Vorkath still worth killing at endgame?
For superior dragon bones and visage chances, yes. For pure GP per hour, later bosses beat him — compare options in best bosses for money.

Bottom Line
Vorkath is a memory fight wearing a dragon costume. Keep antifire up, kill the spawn with Crumble Undead, walk the acid path, and re-enable prayer after the purple ball — that is the whole boss.
Learn it in gear you can lose, run the same loop every kill, and only then optimise your bank route and spec weapon. Consistency beats a stronger crossbow.
If Vorkath is blocking a Prayer goal or a gear milestone, our PvM team can clear it or coach it hand-done — no bots, and you keep the knowledge.
