OSRS Bone Voyage Guide: Requirements and Walkthrough — Bils Services

Bone Voyage is the short Intermediate quest that unlocks Fossil Island. One hundred Kudos is the real requirement — the barge paperwork is the easy part.

Overview

Bone Voyage exists to put Fossil Island on your world map. Intermediate difficulty, Short length, and a hard 100 Kudos gate at the Varrock Museum.

Once Kudos is ready, the quest is signature gathering and sawmill paperwork more than combat. Digsite and Lumber Yard teleports turn it into a brief afternoon task.

Birdhouses, rich mining and several later quests assume island access. If Kudos is unfinished, that is your actual quest.

Requirements and Prerequisites

Skill and quest gates below are taken from the OSRS Wiki quest-details block for this quest. Boostability notes follow the Wiki markers — if a level is unboostable, train it before you start.

Quest prerequisites (chains can be longer than this summary):

If the Wiki lists alternate item unlocks instead of a skill (for example a gas mask instead of Slayer), either option is valid.

Items to Bring

Pack required items before the first travel segment. Recommended gear is comfort, not a hard gate, unless a fight forces a specific style.

Required

  • 2 vodka
  • Marrentill potion (unf)

Recommended

  • Fast travel to the Digsite (Digsite teleport or Digsite pendant; 3-4 teleports recommended)
  • Fast travel to the Lumber Yard (short walk from the Digsite or use a Lumberyard teleport — alternatively, use the Balloon Transport System, costing a Willow Log per flight; 2 teleports recommended). You can also use a Ring of the elements to teleport to Earth Altar and run north.
  • Fast travel to the Woodcutting Guild (Skills necklace or Xeric's talisman to Xeric's Lookout)
  • Fast travel to Varrock (Varrock teleport)
  • Fast travel to reach Port Sarim (Amulet of glory or Explorer's ring 2)
  • Post-quest recommended:
  • An iron bar, 2 oak planks, 5 nails and a hammer if you want to build the bank chest on Fossil Island (Note: This requires 21 Construction)

Ultimate Ironmen should split heavy deliveries across trips where the Wiki notes that is allowed.

Where to Start

Starting location: Talk to Curator Haig Halen in the Varrock Museum.

Use the travel method that fits your unlocks — games necklace, fairy rings, spirit trees, carpets, or spellbook teleports — and keep a teleport out for deaths during combat sections.

Quest List blurb (paraphrased intent): Curator Haig Halen needs your help to finish the construction of a barge fit to take the Varrock museum crew to an unexplored landmass to the east. There have been many attempts to reach the island, but none were successful. This quest will have you venturing across Gielinor, aid…

Walkthrough, Stage by Stage

Numbered steps follow the Wiki quick-guide order, rewritten for BILS readers. Dialogue choices that gate progress are called out inline. For puzzle tiles or randomised layouts, use the dedicated puzzles section and the Wiki map if a step still feels unclear.

  1. Starting out. Speak to Curator Haig Halen in the Varrock Museum. (dialogue: Have you any interesting news? → Sign me up!)
  2. The finishing touches. Travel to the canal barge north of The Digsite and speak to the barge foreman.
  3. Speak to the sawmill operator in the Lumber Yard. (dialogue: I'm here on behalf of the museum archaeological team.)
  4. Bring the sawmill proposal to the sawmill operator in the Woodcutting Guild. (dialogue: I'm here on behalf of the museum archaeological team.)
  5. If you don't have the requirements to enter, just try and open the eastern gate of the guild to complete this step.
  6. Bring the sawmill agreement back to the Lumber Yard's sawmill operator. (dialogue: I'm here on behalf of the museum archaeological team.)
  7. The cursed voyage. Speak to the barge foreman.
  8. Right click the Embark option on the barge guard.
  9. Speak to the Lead Navigator. (dialogue: Yep, that would be me. → I'm aware, no need to tell me about them.)
  10. Speak with Jack Seagull in the Rusty Anchor Inn in Port Sarim. (dialogue: Ever made any cursed voyages?) or (dialogue: Ever made any cursed voyages?)
  11. Return to the northern part of the digsite and board the boat through the barge guard.
  12. Speak with the Lead Navigator.
  13. Speak to the Odd Old Man at the limestone mine to the north. You can get there by deboarding the boat and walking west, north, then east. (dialogue: Talk about lucky charms. → I'm making a cursed voyage.) He will give you the Bone charm.
  14. Speak to the Apothecary in Varrock. Bring your two bottles of vodka and your Marrentill potion (unf)
  15. Chat options depend on quests completed. Pick Talk about something else., then pick Talk about Bone Voyage.
  16. Speak to him again, selecting the same chat options as before.
  17. Return to the Lead Navigator to give him the potion of sealegs.
  18. Speak to the Junior Navigator to give him the bone charm. (dialogue: I'm ready, let's go.)
  19. The "cursed" voyage. You will have to steer left or right using the controls on the interface. The progress bar will indicate how far you have to go to reach the island.
  20. When the top arrow tilts to the left, click on the right arrow.
  21. When the top arrow tilts to the right, click on the left arrow.
  22. Changing the height of the sails will alter how drastically the boat shifts from side to side. Having the boat's sails as large as possible when going in a straight line will allow for a more consistent travel route.
  23. Once the progress bar is filled, you will arrive at Fossil Island.
  24. Finish the closing dialogue — the quest is complete.

If a mid-quest fight sends you to your respawn, return with the same key items — several quests do not store progress for partially completed combat.

Puzzles and How They Work

Puzzle sections in modern quests are often randomised per account. The table below covers the puzzle types you should expect; exact tile solutions belong on the Wiki when they change per player.

Puzzles in this quest

Skip this section emotionally if the quest is combat-only — still skim for any mid-quest door puzzles.

Boss Fights

This quest may be light on named bosses. Still expect combat or dangerous NPCs in places — read kill warnings on the Wiki if your account is low combat.

Common Mistakes and Warnings

Bone Voyage only feels long when Kudos was never banked.

  • Starting without 100 Kudos and stalling at the curator.
  • Running the sawmill step without a Woodcutting Guild plan or Berry workaround.
  • Under-bringing Digsite teleports and walking every signature loop.
  • Forgetting post-quest museum/island follow-ups that people confuse with the quest itself.
  • Treating Short length as 'do it tomorrow' while birdhouse accounts wait on the unlock.

Ironman Notes

Finish museum quizzes and fossil displays toward 100 Kudos before quest night.

Tithe Farm teleport can help irons reach the Hosidius sawmill area if guild entry is awkward.

Digsite pendant charges are worth crafting before the barge errands.

FAQ

What does Bone Voyage unlock?

Travel to Fossil Island.

Is 100 Kudos skippable?

No.

Is there combat?

Not in any meaningful boss sense — this is an unlock errand.

Why is this high priority?

Birdhouse runs and island content are major account XP engines.

How short is Short?

Very, if Kudos and teleports are ready.

Bottom Line

Bank 100 Kudos first, then Bone Voyage is a short paperwork quest with a massive unlock.

Do it the day your museum hits 100 — do not leave Fossil Island gated for weeks.
