Fastest Way to Get the OSRS Quest Cape

The quest cape is gated by 24 skill requirements, one combat level and one quest point total. Here is which of them actually blocks you, and the order that wastes the least time.
Overview
There are 182 quests in Old School RuneScape worth 341 quest points, and you need every one of them for the cape. 24 are free-to-play and 158 are members-only, so this is a membership project from the start.
The fastest route is not a quest order — it is working out which of the 24 skill requirements you are furthest from, and training those while you clear the quests that do not need them. Almost everyone who stalls on a quest cape stalls on one or two skills, not on the quests themselves.
The cape itself costs 99,000 coins from the Wise Old Man in Draynor Village, and it comes with the quest point hood. Trimming it needs every achievement diary as well, which is a separate project.

Every Requirement That Gates You
This is the whole gate list. Each row is the highest level any single quest demands in that skill, and the quest that demands it. If your account already clears a row, that skill is not your problem.

Only two of those are boostable: Fishing to 62 for Swan Song and Mining to 72 for Making Friends with My Arm. Everything else has to be trained honestly. Note the trap in both rows — Song of the Elves needs 70 Mining unboosted and The Fremennik Exiles needs 60 Fishing unboosted, so you cannot skip those two levels even though the higher number is boostable.
The Fastest Route in Practice
Work in this order and you spend the least time blocked. The principle is simple: every hour you spend training a skill you were going to need anyway is not wasted, but every hour you spend logged in with nothing you can start is.
1. Clear everything with no skill requirement first
There is a large block of early quests that need nothing but combat ability, and several of them pay for the levels you need later. Waterfall Quest alone gives 13,750 Attack and 13,750 Strength with no requirements at all.
2. Unlock the skills that unlock other quests
- Druidic Ritual — turns Herblore on at all, and Herblore 70 is a quest cape requirement
- Priest in Peril — the gateway to Morytania and a long list of later quests
- Lost City — Zanaris and fairy ring travel, which shortens dozens of later trips
- Animal Magnetism — Ava's device, which changes how every ranged section feels
- Ghosts Ahoy — the Ectophial, one of the best free teleports in the game
3. Push the highest numbers while you quest
Firemaking 75, Magic 75, Slayer 74 and Woodcutting 74 are the tallest single levels. Slayer is the slowest of them by a wide margin because you cannot buy XP, so start Slayer early even if you are not near the level yet.
4. Save the grandmasters for last
Dragon Slayer II needs 200 quest points on its own, and Desert Treasure II, Song of the Elves and While Guthix Sleeps between them set nine of the twenty-four skill requirements. They naturally fall at the end, and there is no benefit to forcing them earlier.
5. Handle Recipe for Disaster as a project, not a quest
Recipe for Disaster is ten subquests with their own prerequisite chains. Treat it as its own to-do list rather than a single line item, or it will keep bouncing you back to older content.
Where Time Actually Goes
If you are trying to compress a quest cape, these are the parts worth attacking, in rough order of how much time they consume for most accounts.
| What | Why it costs time | How to shorten it |
|---|---|---|
| Slayer to 74 | No buyable XP, and tasks are random | Start it early and run it in the background of everything else |
| Agility to 70 | Slow, low-engagement training | Do it while you are doing something else on a second screen |
| Recipe for Disaster | Ten subquests with separate requirement chains | Batch the subquests by region rather than in journal order |
| Grandmaster prerequisites | Long chains behind Secrets of the North and Sins of the Father | Clear the chains before you look at the grandmaster itself |
| Combat level 85 | Quest XP alone does not get you there | Fold it into Slayer training rather than treating it separately |
| Getting unstuck | Reading a walkthrough mid-quest is most of the wall-clock time | Read the whole walkthrough before you start, then play it in one sitting |

Keeping the Cape
- Every new quest release unequips the cape until you complete the new quest
- If your inventory is full when that happens the cape is banked; if your bank is full too, it is destroyed and you re-buy it for 99,000 coins
- Trimming it requires every achievement diary, which also earns you the achievement diary cape
- The cape teleports you to a fairy ring, which is why ironmen value it beyond the cosmetic
FAQ
How many quests do I need for the quest cape?
All 182 quests currently in the game, worth 341 quest points. Miniquests do not count toward it. Quest and level totals verified against the OSRS Wiki on 3 August 2026.
What is the hardest requirement?
For most accounts it is Slayer 74, because Slayer XP cannot be bought and tasks are random. The tallest single levels are 75 Firemaking and 75 Magic, but both are far quicker to train than Slayer.
Can I boost any quest cape requirements?
Two. Fishing to 62 for Swan Song and Mining to 72 for Making Friends with My Arm. Watch the exceptions though: Song of the Elves needs 70 Mining unboosted and The Fremennik Exiles needs 60 Fishing unboosted.
What is the minimum total level for a quest cape?
1,631, using boosts in Fishing and Mining and reaching combat level 85 by the cheapest route that still gives 130 combined Attack and Strength for the Warriors' Guild.
Do I lose the cape when a new quest comes out?
You keep the item but cannot wear or operate it until you finish the new quest. If your inventory and bank are both full at that moment, it is destroyed and has to be re-purchased.
Is the quest cape worth it if I am not going for max?
The fairy ring teleport and the sheer number of unlocked areas are useful on any account, and ironmen in particular treat it as infrastructure rather than a trophy.

Bottom Line
The quest cape is a skilling project disguised as a questing project. Find which of the 24 rows in the table above your account fails, train those, and the quests themselves take care of each other.
Slayer 74 and Agility 70 are the two that decide the timeline for most accounts, so start them the day you decide you want the cape rather than when a quest blocks you.
If the requirement grind is the part you do not want, our quest cape service is quoted per account after we look at your current levels — hand-played, no automation.
