OSRS Fresh Ironman Build Guide

Practical advice for a new Ironman: which skills and minigames to hit first, where to stop, and which early quest lines actually move the account.
The Short Answer
A fresh Ironman wastes the most time by copying a main's first 99. You cannot buy food, runes, or potions. The useful opening is a build: unlock a few areas, train the skills that produce supplies, then take the quest lines that give real gear. This page is that advice — what to do first, and where to stop so you do not paint yourself into a corner.
It is not a race to a cape and it is not a full 1–99 list. It is the order that makes a new iron feel rich in supplies instead of broke in every skill that matters.
| Stage | What you do | Why it pays off |
|---|---|---|
| Unlocks | F2P quests, then Druidic Ritual / Temple of the Eye / Children of the Sun when you need them | Access beats quest points this early |
| Wintertodt | Firemaking 1–50 by hand, then the minigame | Stop at 90–92 — crates are weak on a low-skill iron |
| GOTR | Mining 41, Agility 56, 10 Runecraft, Temple of the Eye | Runes for Magic later, not a 99 |
| Tempoross | Fishing 35 by hand, then the minigame | Fishing and Cooking together — your first real food stack |
| Seeds and pots | Thieving to Master Farmers → Farming → Herblore | Prayer potions before you need them in a fight |
| Smithing | Motherlode Mine → Blast Furnace, goldsmith gauntlets first | Bars without burning the gold ore |
| Combat | Gemstone Crab after Children of the Sun, Magic on GOTR runes | Enough to start the first real quest fights |
| First goals | Barrows gloves → Barrows KC → Moons of Peril → Song of the Elves | Gear and mid-level skills, then PvM |

Unlock the Map Before You Pick a Long Goal
Start with free-to-play quests so you can move. Then pick a direction — but do not dive into a long members line until you can feed it. On a new iron, a blocked quest is usually a missing stack (food, runes, herbs), not a missing guide.
The optimal quest order is still the right list for which quest to click. This page is the iron work in front of that list: the gathering and the minigames that make the clicks possible.
Firemaking and Wintertodt — Stop at 90–92
First skill: Firemaking. Train 1–50 by making fires. Cut your own logs so Woodcutting comes along — 40 Woodcutting is a realistic side product. Varrock works early because normal trees and oaks sit next to each other.
50 Firemaking plus Druidic Ritual unlocks Wintertodt. Most accounts ride it to 99 because it is fast. On a fresh iron that is the wrong stop.
Crate value scales with Herblore, Mining, Fishing, Crafting, Farming, and Woodcutting. If those are still low, the rare rolls are weak. Stop at 90–92 Firemaking, search the crates for materials and GP, then leave. Come back for 99 after those skills are medium. The Firemaking 1–99 guide is the method page; this build only cares about the iron stop point.
Mining, Agility, and Guardians of the Rift
Next: Mining and Agility so Guardians of the Rift is worth walking to. Power-mine to at least 41 Mining for a rune pickaxe. Train Agility to 56 so you can reach the larger remains inside the minigame.
Finish Temple of the Eye and get 10 Runecraft — that is the gate. Then play GOTR to around 77 Runecraft, or until you have a rune pile you will actually spend. Those runes are later Magic training, not a reason to sit in the rift for a 99. Methods: Runecraft 1–99 and Mining 1–99.
Fishing and Tempoross — Train Cooking With It
After Runecraft, go to Fishing. Power-fish to 35, then move to Tempoross. That is the fresh-iron chance to train Fishing and Cooking in the same hours.
Around 70 in both is enough for this stage. Then gather more fish and cook them. You want a real food stack before the first combat quests — not a handful of leftover shrimp.
Thieving, Farming, and Herblore
Train Thieving with any early method until you can steal from Master Farmers. Those seeds are how a new iron starts Farming. Plant trees, herbs, and flowers — see the Farming 1–99 guide and the herb run guide.
Then train Herblore for potions, especially prayer potions. Make them before you need them in a fight. A fresh iron that waits until the first hard quest to notice they have 12 doses is the common stall.
Smithing: Motherlode Mine, Blast Furnace, Goldsmith Gauntlets
For Smithing, mine at Motherlode Mine, bank the ores and coal, then smelt at Blast Furnace. That pairing is the clean iron bar engine.
Get goldsmith gauntlets before you commit a gold-ore stack. They come from Family Crest — or Family Pest if you already finished Crest and need them again. They save about 2.5× the gold ore. Ice gloves help at the furnace too, instead of buckets of water.
The Smithing 1–99 guide is the method page. This build only insists on the gauntlets first, because wasting gold ore on a new iron is a real setback.
Combat: Gemstone Crab and GOTR Runes
Train melee at Gemstone Crab after Children of the Sun. Train Magic the same way once GOTR has given you runes.
You do not need a raids setup. You need combat high enough for the first real quest fights — Recipe for Disaster, Monkey Madness I, Desert Treasure I. Gear after that is a separate page: Ironman equipment progression.
First Quest Goals Worth Taking
Take quest lines one at a time. The first high-value line on a new iron is Barrows gloves — Recipe for Disaster. It needs 175 quest points and some skills beside it, but it is the easiest upgrade that changes every fight afterwards. While you are on that path, finish Monkey Madness I and Desert Treasure I. Those two unlock a lot of the account.
After gloves, do some Barrows kill count for usable gear. When that gear is good enough, go to Moons of Peril. The moon sets are one of the best mid-game iron power spikes — they matter more here than they do on a main.
When the set is in place, take Song of the Elves. That push puts most skills into the medium band and takes you past 200 quest points. From there the account is ready for a real PvM grind, not another random skill hop.
FAQ
Why not Wintertodt to 99 on a new iron?
Crate loot is worse while Herblore, Mining, Fishing, Crafting, Farming, and Woodcutting are low. 90–92 Firemaking is enough to leave, raise those skills, and come back when the crates are worth opening.
Should I follow the optimal quest list from day one?
Use it for the next click. Do not use it as the whole plan. The list assumes you can buy what the next quest wants. A fresh iron has to make those supplies first.
Is this for Hardcore Ironman too?
The skill and minigame order is the same. The combat quests are not. Treat Recipe for Disaster, Desert Treasure, and Song as optional until you are comfortable with the death risk — our terms do not cover hardcore deaths.
Do I need Moons of Peril before Song of the Elves?
You need a mid-game set that can take a real fight. Moons is the iron-friendly way to get that set. If you already have equivalent gear, skip ahead.
What if I want help on a specific grind?
Defined iron quest work and gathering ranges are quoted per account — Ironman quests and Ironman gathering. The work is hand-played.

Final Thoughts
A fresh Ironman gets rich by stacking supplies, not by rushing one 99. Wintertodt, GOTR, Tempoross, Master Farmers, and Blast Furnace are the engine. Barrows gloves, moon sets, and Song of the Elves are the first goals that change what the account can do.
Stop Wintertodt before 99, get the gauntlets before the gold ore, and do not start Song in starter gear. After that, pick PvM or a longer quest list — you will have the bank to support either.
