OSRS Sailing Guide 1–99: Port Tasks, Voyages, Ship Upgrades and Dock Unlocks — Bils Services

Sailing 1–99 as a routing problem: how port tasks compare to voyages, which ship upgrades to buy first, why the level 62 Wyrmscraig dock matters, and how to plan the grind without chasing every new meta claim.

Overview

Sailing released on 19 November 2025 and is the only skill exclusive to Old School RuneScape. It is a utility skill, and it is a navigation skill rather than a clicking skill — your XP per hour comes from how well you route between ports and how your boat is fitted out, not from click speed.

One thing to get straight before planning anything: there is no single Sailing method you grind from 1 to 99. There are five distinct activities with genuinely different profiles — port tasks, sea charting, shipwreck salvaging, Barracuda Trials and deep sea trawling — and the right answer changes with your level and what you want out of the session.

Barracuda Trials give the highest XP per hour. Deep sea trawling for marlin is one of the highest-earning skilling activities in the game. Sea charting is one-off XP that also unlocks faster travel. Those three do not compete with each other; you should do all of them.

Quest and Diary Unlocks That Change the Route

There is exactly one hard gate: Pandemonium, a novice quest you start by talking to Will and Anne on the Port Sarim docks. It has no other quest requirements, so a fresh account can begin Sailing immediately. Everything after that is a Sailing level gate rather than a quest gate.

Two other quests are worth knowing about. Prying Times is the Sailing sequel quest, and Current Affairs is the miniquest that leads into deep sea trawling — the skill's main income activity. Neither is required to train, but Current Affairs is required before you can trawl.

Level unlocks that change what you can do
  • Level
    1
    Unlock
    Raft, port tasks, sea charting
    Why it matters
Everything you can do before your first boat upgrade. The raft is slow and has minimal cargo.
  • Level
    15
    Unlock
    Skiff
    Why it matters
Your first real boat. Not boostable, so this is a genuine wall.
  • Level
    20
    Unlock
    Shipwreck salvaging
    Why it matters
The low-attention activity, and a solid Ironman resource source.
  • Level
    30
    Unlock
    First Barracuda Trial tier
    Why it matters
Trials are the fastest XP in the skill. This is where the grind properly starts.
  • Level
    50
    Unlock
    Sloop
    Why it matters
The top boat tier. Also not boostable. A significant materials investment.
  • Level
    62
    Unlock
    Wyrmscraig island
    Why it matters
The access milestone most accounts are actually training toward.
  • Level
    Varies
    Unlock
Facilities (cannons, harpoon stations, cargo holds)
    Why it matters
Gated on both Sailing and Construction. Several Barracuda Trials require specific facilities to be fitted.
  • Level
    Varies
    Unlock
    Additional docking points and islands
    Why it matters
56 docking points and 27 unlockable islands in total, spread across nine oceans.

The boat tiers deserve emphasis because they are not boostable. You cannot pop a stew to squeeze into a skiff at 13 or a sloop at 48 — you train to the level or you sail the slower hull.

Wyrmscraig, the island unlocked at level 62 Sailing
Wyrmscraig unlocks at level 62. It is the milestone most accounts are actually training toward, which is why it is worth targeting deliberately instead of drifting past it.

Recommended Equipment and Boosts

Sailing 'gear' is your boat and the facilities fitted to it. Facilities are the important half, because several Barracuda Trials will not let you compete without the right one installed — so this is not purely an efficiency question.

Facilities and what they are for
  • Facility
    Cannons
    Purpose
Boat combat and any Trial with a combat component.
    Notes
Gated on Sailing and Construction. Required for several Trials.
  • Facility
    Harpoon station
    Purpose
Deep sea trawling — the skill's main income activity.
    Notes
Also needs the Current Affairs miniquest before trawling is available.
  • Facility
    Cargo hold
    Purpose
Carrying capacity for port tasks and courier work.
    Notes
Directly raises how much a single run completes.
  • Facility
    Salvage equipment
    Purpose
    Shipwreck salvaging from level 20.
    Notes
    The low-attention activity's prerequisite.
  • Facility
    Wind catcher
    Purpose
Speed. Your boat's speed depends on catching the wind, not on a flat stat.
    Notes
This is why routing beats raw upgrades — sailing against the wind is slow regardless of hull.
  • Facility
    Cosmetic fittings
    Purpose
    Appearance only.
    Notes
Buy last. They do nothing for XP or income.

The wind mechanic is the thing most new sailors miss. Your speed is a function of your angle to the wind, so a well-routed raft can beat a badly-routed skiff over the same distance. Learning to read the wind is a bigger early upgrade than any purchase.

Level-by-Level Training Table

The route follows the activity unlocks rather than arbitrary level bands. Port task capacity also scales with your level, so the same task type gets better as you go without you changing anything.

Sailing 1–99 route
  • Levels
    1–15
    Method
Pandemonium, then port tasks and sea charting on the raft
    Notes
Sea charting is one-off XP per route and also unlocks faster travel, so do it as you pass through.
  • Levels
    15–20
    Method
    Port tasks on the skiff
    Notes
The skiff is a large jump in cargo and handling over the raft.
  • Levels
    20–30
    Method
    Shipwreck salvaging plus port tasks
    Notes
Salvaging is the first genuinely low-attention option.
  • Levels
    30–50
    Method
Barracuda Trials as they unlock, port tasks between them
    Notes
Trials are the fastest XP. Fit the facilities each Trial requires before you queue.
  • Levels
    50–62
    Method
Sloop, then Trials at full capability
    Notes
Also the point where deep sea trawling becomes worth building toward.
  • Levels
    62
    Method
    Wyrmscraig island unlock
    Notes
The access milestone. Target it deliberately rather than drifting past it.
  • Levels
    62–99
    Method
Highest-tier Barracuda Trials, trawling for income
    Notes
Trials for XP, trawling for GP. They are separate sessions, not one activity.
  • Levels
    Any level
    Method
    Sea charting new routes
    Notes
Charting a route pays once but permanently shortens the trip. Chart before you grind a region.

One structural point: Barracuda Trials are competitive time-trial races, so they reward learning the course. Your rate on a Trial you know well is far higher than on one you are seeing for the first time. Repeating a familiar Trial usually beats chasing the newest one you just unlocked.

Fastest Route

Barracuda Trials are the fastest XP in the skill, so the fast route is really a question of getting to Trials quickly and then getting good at a small number of them.

  1. Finish Pandemonium. It is novice-level with no other quest requirements.
  2. Do port tasks and chart routes to 15 for the skiff, then to 30.
  3. At 30, start Barracuda Trials. Check which facilities each Trial requires and fit them before queueing — an unfitted boat cannot compete in several of them.
  4. Learn two or three Trial courses properly rather than sampling every one. Course knowledge is where the rate comes from in a time trial.
  5. Chart routes in any region before you grind there. Charting is one-off XP and permanently shortens the trip.
  6. Learn the wind. Your speed is your angle to the wind, so a good line beats a better hull.
  7. Get to 50 for the sloop, then run the highest Trial tier available to you.
  8. Target 62 for Wyrmscraig deliberately, then decide whether the cape is worth the rest.

Cheapest and Most Affordable Route

  • Fit only the facilities your chosen activities actually need. Facilities cost Construction materials as well as Sailing levels, so fitting everything is expensive.
  • Chart routes early. Charting is free XP and every shortened trip afterwards is saved time.
  • Delay the sloop if 50 is far away. A well-sailed skiff on a charted route is not the bottleneck people assume.
  • Shipwreck salvaging supplies materials, so it partly funds its own upgrades.
  • Learn the wind before buying speed upgrades. Routing is the free version of the same benefit.
  • Islands you unlock give resource access; gather your own facility materials there rather than buying them.

AFK and Low-Intensity Route

  • Shipwreck salvaging from level 20 is the closest Sailing has to a low-intensity method. You sail to a wreck and work it rather than reacting constantly.
  • Courier-style port tasks on charted routes are the other option — a known route needs far less attention than an unknown one.
  • Set your cannons to 'Fire At Will' so boat combat handles itself while you focus on the route.
  • Barracuda Trials are the opposite of AFK. They are timed races and every second of inattention costs rate.
  • Deep sea trawling is also fully active. Do not plan it as background activity.
  • Sailing pairs well with island skilling: sail to an unlocked island, then do something low-intensity there.

Profitable Route

  • Deep sea trawling for marlin is the headline earner, and one of the stronger skilling incomes in the game. It needs the Current Affairs miniquest and a harpoon station.
  • Trawling is fully active, so treat it as its own session rather than something you fold into a Trials grind.
  • Boat combat drops are a secondary income source, which is part of why cannons are worth fitting.
  • Island resource access is real money via other skills — the Sailing XP is often the smaller half of the reward.
  • Shipwreck salvaging is the low-effort income option, lower rate but far lower attention than trawling.
  • Marlin prices move like any Grand Exchange item, so check the wiki's money making pages before budgeting against a figure.

Ironman Route

  • Treat Sailing as a supply chain rather than a cape chase. Shipwreck salvaging and island resources are the point; the level is a side effect.
  • Facilities need Construction levels and materials, so plan the two skills together instead of hitting a facility wall at 50 Sailing.
  • Shipwreck salvaging is the standout Ironman activity — materials you cannot buy, at a low attention cost.
  • Prioritise the islands that give resources your account is actually short of over the ones that are simply next.
  • Capsizing costs you your cargo, so a bad route on a loaded boat is an expensive mistake with no Grand Exchange to rebuy from.
  • Target level 62 for Wyrmscraig access, then reassess whether more levels serve your account.

Common Mistakes

  • Queueing a Barracuda Trial without the facility it requires, then wondering why you cannot compete.
  • Ignoring the wind. Speed is your angle to the wind, so sailing a straight line into a headwind is the slowest possible route.
  • Grinding a region before charting it, and paying the longer trip time on every single run.
  • Sampling every new Trial instead of learning two or three well. These are time trials — course knowledge is the rate.
  • Trying to trawl before Current Affairs, or without a harpoon station fitted.
  • Expecting a boost to reach the skiff at 13 or the sloop at 48. Boat tiers are not boostable.
  • Sailing a loaded boat on an unfamiliar route. Capsizing loses the cargo.
  • Chasing 99 when level 62 unlocked the Wyrmscraig access you actually wanted.

Useful Plugins

  • Wind and heading overlays — the single most useful category for Sailing, because your speed is a function of your angle to the wind.
  • World Map — plan port task clusters and charting runs before you leave.
  • XP Tracker — compare a Trial you know against a Trial you have just unlocked before committing a session.
  • Menu Entry Swapper — keeps dock, helm and facility interactions consistent.
  • Bank Tags — group facility materials so refitting between activities is fast.
  • Notes — track which of the 27 islands and 56 docking points you have unlocked.

FAQ

Is level 62 Sailing enough?

It is enough for Wyrmscraig island, which is the milestone most accounts are actually training toward. It is not the end of the skill's unlocks, so keep going if later island access or the cape matters to you.

What is the fastest Sailing XP?

Barracuda Trials, from level 30. They are timed races, so your rate depends heavily on knowing the course — repeating two or three Trials you know well beats sampling every one you unlock.

What do I need to start Sailing?

The Pandemonium quest, which you start with Will and Anne on the Port Sarim docks. It is novice-level and has no other quest requirements, so any members account can begin immediately.

Do I need the sloop?

Eventually, for the top Trial tiers, but it is a level 50 unlock and it is not boostable. Below that the skiff at 15 on a charted route with the wind behind you does more than people expect.

Is Sailing profitable?

Yes, directly. Deep sea trawling for marlin is one of the stronger skilling incomes in the game. It needs the Current Affairs miniquest and a harpoon station, and it is fully active rather than something you fold into an XP session.

What happens if I capsize?

You lose the cargo you were carrying. That makes unfamiliar routes on a loaded boat the expensive kind of mistake, and it is the main argument for charting a region before you start running it commercially.

Bottom Line

Sailing is a planning problem before it is a clicking problem. Finish Pandemonium, chart your routes, learn to read the wind, and get to 30 for Barracuda Trials — that is the fast lane. Deep sea trawling after Current Affairs is the money, and it is a separate session rather than part of the XP grind.

The levels that actually change your day are 15 and 50 for the boat tiers, 30 for Trials, and 62 for Wyrmscraig. Neither boat tier is boostable, so plan around them rather than hoping for a shortcut.

If Sailing is blocking content you actually want to play, our Sailing training is hand-done to the level you need.

Level gates, activity unlocks and boat tiers were verified against the Old School RuneScape Wiki on 3 August 2026. XP-per-hour figures are intentionally not quoted because they depend on your fittings and routing; the wiki's Sailing training page maintains current rates.
