OSRS While Guthix Sleeps Guide: Requirements and Rewards

While Guthix Sleeps needs 180 quest points and eight unboostable skills, and it unlocks tormented demons plus the emberlight, scorching bow and purging staff. Here are the requirements, all five puzzles and how the Balance Elemental works.
Overview
While Guthix Sleeps was backported to Old School RuneScape on 10 July 2024, sixteen years after its original release. It is rated Grandmaster and Very Long, needs 180 quest points, and it is the gateway to tormented demons and the demonbane weapons made from Duradel's notes.
The quest is unusually puzzle-heavy for a combat-gated Grandmaster. There are five distinct puzzles, three of them randomised per player, and the base infiltration section blocks all teleportation once you pass a certain point.
Combat appears three times, and the Balance Elemental is the fight worth preparing for specifically: it uses all three styles, escalates its attack speed and prayer count as its health drops, and refuses to switch protection prayers until you damage it. Bringing fewer than three attack styles means you will stall in the final phase.

Fourteen direct quest prerequisites, each with its own chain behind it:
- Defender of Varrock, Temple of Ikov, Below Ice Mountain
- Garden of Tranquillity, The Path of Glouphrie, Fight Arena
- Dream Mentor, Eadgar's Ruse, The Hand in the Sand
- Wanted!, Recruitment Drive, The Lost Tribe
- Temple of the Eye, Tears of Guthix, A Tail of Two Cats
The quest is not completable in Leagues, because it requires Misthalin.
Items to Bring
This is a spell-heavy quest. Surok Magis is immune to powered staves and can only be hurt by combat spells, and several of his specials are countered by utility spells rather than by damage.
Required
- Ring of Charos(a) or 500 coins
- Knife, seed dibber (unless you have done the Barbarian Training farming section)
- Lantern lens, unpowered orb, sapphire lantern
- Bronze med helm and iron chainbody
- Runes for four casts of Astral Contact — 8 air, 4 astral, 4 cosmic
- Runes for any charge orb spell — 30 elemental and 3 cosmic
- Equipment for two different combat styles at minimum, and three for the Balance Elemental
- Runes for multiple casts of all four elemental spells, Snare or Entangle, Weaken or Enfeeble, Telekinetic Grab, and Low or High Level Alchemy
Recommended
- An emergency teleport item rather than runes — the Balance Elemental can drain your Magic to 1
- Ardougne cloak 1 or better, plus multiple Falador teleports or a ring of returning with a Falador respawn
- Taverley teleport, fairy rings and a Feldip Hills teleport
- Antipoison
- The Dark Squall robes, once you have them — they are always kept on death, so they let you safely reclaim items after dying to Surok
All teleportation is blocked from the stairs in Movario's base onward, so do not plan to hop out and restock mid-section.
Where to Start
Talk to Ivy Sophista in Taverley, in the building with the crystal chest, then go up the ladder to Thaerisk.
Two level 167 assassins ambush you almost immediately, so arrive with combat gear equipped rather than in your bank outfit.
Walkthrough, Stage by Stage
Seventeen stages. The Movario's base section and the chasm bottom are the two places to slow down and read carefully.
- Speak to Ivy, then Thaerisk, and survive the assassin ambush.
- Learn about Movario. Bribe or charm the Khazard Launderer at the Fight Arena for a dirty shirt.
- Catch a broav with a pitfall trap in the Feldip hunting area baited with mort myre fungus, then have the hunting expert train it.
- Use the shirt on the broav in the ruined building on the Battlefield to find the trapdoor into Movario's base.
- Work through the base: the "PROHIBITED" rune door, the bookcase wiring puzzle, a trapped spiral staircase, Movario's notes volumes 1 and 2 via the ruby key and the bed chest, then the weight and pressure-gauge room behind the painting.
- Deliver the notes to Thaerisk, then save the Guardians of Armadyl in McGrubor's Wood from two mercenary axemen and a mercenary mage.
- Form an alliance at the White Knights' Castle with Akrisae, Thaerisk and Idria. Plant a teleorb on a shady stranger in Draynor.
- Make the super truth serum: pink dye plus a lantern lens to get a rose-tinted lens, enrich a snapdragon seed at Betty's, grow it in the castle roof patch, and combine it with a truth serum.
- Recruit the task force with Astral Contact — Turael, Mazchna, Duradel and Cyrisus — then Ghommal, Harrallak Menarous and Sloane at the Warriors' Guild. Interrogate the spy to get a suspect sketch of the Dark Squall. Hazelmere joins.
- In the Black Knight Catacombs, reached with a charged orb spell on the carved tile, farm a set of elite black armour to stop the aggression, loot the inner base for a second armour set, the Dark Squall robes, a cell key, a lobster, a restore potion, a strange teleorb and death and law runes, and rescue Silif.
- Fight Surok Magis, the Dark Squall, and plant the teleorb on him.
- Impersonate Surok to teleport into Lucien's camp and climb to the Chaos Temple roof. A cutscene follows in which Lucien kills Hazelmere, Cyrisus, Turael, Duradel, Ghommal and Sloane.
- At the Chasm of Tears, meet Movario as Surok and ride a light creature down with a lit sapphire lantern.
- At the bottom, collect four elemental orbs — fire, earth, air and water — from braziers and rock piles, trade them at skull recesses for elemental blocks, and fit each block to the matching mechanism in the skull's nose cavities. The positions are randomised, and the fire block goes on the top floor.
- In the Ancient Guthixian Temple, use druid pouches on eight druid spirits for Herblore ingredients, match each pair to the correct potion-named statue for a dolmen, and place all eight dolmens on the stone table to open the huge door. Recharge pouches by casting Bloom on dead vines.
- Fight the Balance Elemental, touch the Stone of Jas, then kill two Tormented Demons using the Stone's temporary buff. Lucien escapes with the Stone.
- If Dragon Slayer II is already complete you get an optional epilogue Dragonkin cutscene, with an unskippable intro of about a minute.
Hand Movario's notes to Thaerisk before you go back to loot the base. If you fail the weight room while holding them, they are confiscated even from your bank.
Puzzles and How They Work
Five puzzles, three of them randomised per player. None can be skipped, and two of them punish failure directly.
| Puzzle | Type | How it works |
|---|---|---|
| The rune door | Observation | One letter in "PROHIBITED" is stylised as a rune, and which one differs per player. Choosing the wrong rune fires an unblockable 20+ blast, but the colour of the blast tells you the correct rune. |
| Bookcase wiring | Follow the wires | Search bookcases and follow the illuminated floor wires until the electric gate deactivates. You cannot enter the room if you weigh under 2 kg, so take off weight-reducing clothing. |
| Weight and pressure gauge | Arithmetic with weights | Match your equipment-interface mass to the gauge's target by carrying 1, 2 and 5 kg weights or stacking them on the statue. Three failed attempts gasses you into a jail room and confiscates Movario's notes. |
| Elemental orbs and blocks | Randomised matching | Collect four orbs, trade them for blocks at skull recesses, and fit each block to the matching mechanism in the nose cavities. Positions are randomised per player; the fire block goes on the top floor. |
| Dolmens and statues | Randomised Herblore matching | Use druid pouches on eight druid spirits for ingredients, then match each pair to the correct potion-named statue out of thirteen possible statues. The set is randomised per player. Recharge pouches with Bloom on dead vines. |

Boss Fights
Three fights, and two of them break the usual rules. Surok cannot be hit by powered staves at all, and the Balance Elemental will not switch prayers until you damage it.
| Fight | Attacks with | Pray | What decides the fight |
|---|---|---|---|
| Surok Magis (level 265, 450 hitpoints) | Fire Surge | Protect from Magic — he hits 40+ without it | He has Protect from Melee and Protect from Missiles active at the same time, so you must use combat spells. He is immune to powered staves and to blood-spell sapping. Every seven to eight attacks he uses a special: a summoned Strong Warrior (counter with Weaken) or Agile Warrior (counter with a binding spell), a lit explosive (Telekinetic Grab then Alchemy), or one to four elemental surges that must each be countered by casting the opposite element at the surge — air against earth, water against fire. |
| Balance Elemental (level 524, 750 hitpoints) | All three styles, switching every four attacks | Match its head colour: blue is Magic, orange is Ranged, white is Melee | Do not be fooled by the melee animation looking like a projectile. Its special hits up to 89 and drains combat stats plus a large chunk of Prayer. Below 550 hitpoints it speeds up and gains a protection prayer; below 200 it speeds up again and runs two. Your reaction window drops from 2 ticks to 1 below half health. It route-finds around safespots and will not switch its protection prayers until you damage it, so all three attack styles are mandatory. It has negative defence against crush, heavy ranged and Magic. |
| Two Tormented Demons (level 450) | Switch based on your prayers | They use protection prayers themselves | A fire shield cuts damage from non-demonbane and non-abyssal weapons by 20%. They route-find and can bind you before launching fire projectiles at nearby tiles — walk out of the targeted tiles. Touching the Stone of Jas raises your stats to 255, so damage is not the problem here. The Guardians of Armadyl can also solo them in around ten minutes if you hide behind the south-western column. |

If you die to Surok, your gravestone is in the elite black knight tunnels. The Dark Squall robes are always kept on death, so wear them to reclaim safely. Dying to the Balance Elemental leaves your gravestone by Movario and Darve in the Chasm of Tears; you do not need another sapphire lantern to reclaim, but you do need one to return to the bottom.
Rewards and Unlocks
The headline reward is not the experience — it is Duradel's notes, which unlock three demonbane weapons that matter across a lot of late-game content.

What it opens up
- Tormented demons as repeatable content
- The ability to craft the emberlight, scorching bow and purging staff — the demonbane weapons
- The Ancient Guthixian Temple and the Black Knight Catacombs
- Elite black armour and the Dark Squall robes
- The broav as a follower, if you keep it
Common Mistakes and Warnings
This quest has more ways to lose items or lock yourself out than most, and nearly all of them are documented warnings rather than bad luck.
- Bringing only two attack styles. The Balance Elemental will pray against both in its final phase and you will be unable to progress.
- Carrying an emergency teleport as runes. The Elemental can drain your Magic to 1, which makes runes useless. Bring a teleport item.
- Looting Movario's base before handing the notes to Thaerisk. Failing the weight room confiscates the notes even out of your bank.
- Weighing under 2 kg at the bookcase room. You cannot enter. Remove weight-reducing clothing.
- Choosing "Open" on the bed chest. Right-click and "search" it instead, or you trigger an 18+ damage trap. Disable the spiral staircase trap first.
- Talking to a shady stranger before planting the teleorb. You can be locked out of that step for a while.
- Expecting to teleport out of Movario's base. All teleportation is blocked from the stairs onward.
- Reclaiming items after Surok without the Dark Squall robes. The robes are always kept on death, which is what makes the reclaim trip safe.
- Trying to use a powered staff on Surok. He is immune to them. Bring combat spell runes.
Ironman Notes
Duradel's notes give Slayer experience scaled to your Slayer level, so an Ironman gets more out of doing this quest later rather than early.
The 100 death runes, 100 fire runes, 100 coal and 100 magic logs from Movario's base are a genuinely useful pickup on a self-sufficient account. Make the return trip after handing the notes to Thaerisk.
The emberlight in particular changes demon-heavy Slayer tasks, which is one of the strongest quest-gated upgrades available to an Ironman without a grind attached.
FAQ
Do I need three attack styles for While Guthix Sleeps?
For the Balance Elemental, effectively yes. It will not switch protection prayers until you damage it, and in the final phase it runs two prayers at once, so two styles can leave you unable to make progress.
What are the demonbane weapons this unlocks?
The emberlight, the scorching bow and the purging staff, all craftable after you receive Duradel's notes. They are the reason most players do the quest.
Can I use a powered staff like a trident on Surok Magis?
No. He is immune to powered staves and to blood-spell sapping, so you need runes for actual combat spells plus the utility spells that counter his specials.
How much Slayer XP do Duradel's notes give?
Fifteen times your Slayer level, claimed from Kuradal. That makes them worth saving until your Slayer level is higher if you are not in a hurry.
Are the puzzles randomised?
Three of them are: the rune door letter, the elemental block positions and the dolmen statue set all differ per player, so a walkthrough can tell you the method but not the answer.
Is this quest harder than Dragon Slayer II?
Different rather than harder. Dragon Slayer II is a reaction test at Galvek; While Guthix Sleeps is a preparation test, and the Balance Elemental punishes bringing the wrong inventory more than bringing slow reflexes.

Bottom Line
While Guthix Sleeps is a preparation quest. Three attack styles, a teleport item rather than runes, and the discipline to hand Movario's notes over before looting his base will get you through nearly all of it.
The Balance Elemental is the real test, and it is beaten with inventory planning rather than reflexes. Learn to read its head colour rather than its animations and the fight becomes methodical.
If the 180 quest points or the eight unboostable levels are what is standing between you and the demonbane weapons, our quest service and skill training are both hand-completed by the BILS team.
