OSRS Corrupted Gauntlet Guide: Requirements, Prep Phase and Hunllef

The Corrupted Gauntlet from access to kill: what Song of the Elves unlocks, how to spend the prep timer, which crafts to prioritise, and the two rules that decide the Corrupted Hunllef fight.
Overview
The Gauntlet is a solo minigame-style boss in Prifddinas with an unusual structure: you enter with nothing, spend a timed preparation phase gathering and crafting everything you will use, then fight the Crystalline Hunllef with whatever you managed to build. The Corrupted Gauntlet is the same loop with stronger resources required and a much stronger boss.
Because you bring nothing in, the Gauntlet is the purest test of preparation in the game. Your gear is irrelevant. What matters is how efficiently you use the prep timer and whether you know the Hunllef's two switching rules.
This guide covers the access requirement, how to spend prep time, what to craft in which order, and the two rules that decide whether the Hunllef fight goes well.

Requirements and Access
The Gauntlet's requirements are unusual because your bank is irrelevant. Access is a single quest, and after that the barrier is entirely knowledge.
| Requirement | Detail |
|---|---|
| Song of the Elves | The only hard requirement. It unlocks Prifddinas and the Gauntlet. |
| Gathering and crafting levels | Higher Mining, Fishing, Woodcutting, Smithing, Cooking, Herblore and Crafting all make the prep phase faster and safer. |
| Combat levels | No gate, but low combat means the Hunllef fight takes far longer than the food you can gather supports. |
| 43 Prayer | For protection prayers during the Hunllef fight. |
| Corrupted variant | Same quest requirement, but the resources and boss are stronger — clear normal Gauntlet first. |

There is no gear requirement at all, which makes the Gauntlet unusually friendly to Ironmen and to accounts with poor banks but good skills.
Getting There
The Gauntlet entrance is inside Prifddinas, which becomes accessible after Song of the Elves.
- Teleport to Prifddinas using a crystal teleport seed, the Prifddinas teleport, or the Lletya route.
- Head to the Gauntlet entrance and choose the normal or Corrupted variant.
- Enter with an empty inventory — anything you bring is removed anyway.
Because attempts are self-contained, banking between runs is trivial. The travel cost of the Gauntlet is one of the lowest of any boss in the game.
Recommended Stats
The Gauntlet cares more about skilling levels than combat levels, which is genuinely unusual. These are the levels where prep stops being the hard part.
| Stat | Comfortable | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Ranged / Magic / Attack | 80+ | You use crafted crystal weapons, so your levels determine damage, not your gear. |
| Hitpoints | 80+ | You only have crafted food; low HP means fewer mistakes are survivable. |
| Prayer | 43+ | Protection prayers are essential against the Hunllef's alternating attacks. |
| Gathering skills | 70+ each | Mining, Fishing and Woodcutting all speed up the prep phase directly. |
| Crafting / Smithing / Cooking / Herblore | 70+ each | Faster crafting means more of the prep timer spent gathering. |

Gear Setups: Budget, Mid and Best in Slot
You cannot bring gear into the Gauntlet. This table therefore describes what you should aim to craft inside, in priority order, rather than what to wear on the way in.
The Corrupted Gauntlet demands more complete crafting than the normal version, because the Corrupted Hunllef hits harder and the fight lasts longer.

If you are short on prep time, prioritise weapons and food over armour. A well-armed run with light armour beats a fully armoured run that cannot deal damage.
Two attack styles is the practical minimum for the Corrupted Hunllef, because you have to switch styles during the fight.
Inventory and Supplies
Your inventory is whatever you built. That makes the prep phase the real inventory decision, so treat this list as a prep checklist.
- As much paddlefish as you can cook — this is your only food.
- At least two crystal weapons so you can switch attack styles mid-fight.
- Crystal armour pieces, in order: body first, then helm and legs if time allows.
- An egniol potion for prayer restoration during a long fight.
- A teleport crystal so you can leave if the run is already lost.
- Crystal shards left over — they still count toward your reward.
Do not overspend prep time on a perfect loadout. A run that reaches the Hunllef with three minutes of food is better than a run that never reaches it at all.
Mechanics You Have to Respect
The Corrupted Hunllef fight is governed by two switching rules that run at the same time: the Hunllef switches its attack style, and you must switch yours. Most failed runs come from tracking only one of them.
| Mechanic | What it does | Correct response |
|---|---|---|
| Hunllef style switching | The Hunllef alternates between magic and ranged attacks after a set number of attacks. | Switch your protection prayer to match. Count its attacks rather than guessing. |
| Your style switching | The Hunllef builds heavy resistance to whichever style you keep using. | Switch your own weapon to a different style regularly. Never grind the whole fight with one weapon. |
| Tornadoes | Damaging whirlwinds spawn and track you around the arena. | Keep moving. Standing still to squeeze out damage is the most common death cause. |
| Damaging floor tiles | The Hunllef stomps and creates hazardous tiles across the arena. | Reposition away from affected tiles rather than tanking them for extra attacks. |
| Enrage at low health | The Hunllef attacks faster as its health drops. | Save some food and prayer for the end of the fight; do not spend everything in the first half. |

Exact attack counts before each switch are the sort of detail that gets tuned, so confirm current timings on the OSRS Wiki Corrupted Hunllef page before a serious attempt.
Prep Phase and the Hunllef Fight
Split the run into a gathering problem and a switching problem. The gathering problem is solved with a route; the switching problem is solved with counting.
- Enter and immediately start opening rooms toward resources rather than wandering.
- Gather crystal shards from mining, fishing and woodcutting nodes as you move, not in separate trips.
- Kill demi-bosses for the stronger crafting materials once you have a weapon.
- Craft your primary weapon first, then a second weapon in a different style.
- Cook all the paddlefish you gathered. Food is what buys you time to learn the fight.
- Craft armour with whatever prep time is left, prioritising the body slot.
- Enter the Hunllef arena with prayer active and your primary weapon equipped.
- Count the Hunllef's attacks and switch protection prayer when its style changes.
- Switch your own weapon style regularly so it never builds full resistance.
- Keep moving to avoid tornadoes and hazardous tiles, accepting the damage loss.
- Save food and prayer for the enraged final stretch.
If prep went badly, leave with the teleport crystal instead of feeding the Hunllef a doomed attempt. Reset costs a couple of minutes.
Beginner Strategy: Learn It on Normal First
Corrupted is the same dungeon with less slack, so nothing you learn on normal is wasted and everything you have not learned will be punished. If you have not completed normal comfortably, that is the run to be doing.
- Get consistent on normal Gauntlet first. The prep route, the recipes and both attack cycles are identical.
- Do your early corrupted runs with no expectation of a kill. A failed attempt costs the ten minutes and nothing else.
- Practise the prayer count out loud if it helps. The Hunllef opens with Ranged and swaps standard style every fourth attack.
- Keep off the highlighted tiles. Blue turns orange, and orange keeps hurting you for as long as you stand there.
- Never end a movement underneath it, because that triggers the stomp instead of a normal attack.
- Leave with the teleport crystal the moment prep has clearly gone wrong, rather than testing a bad kit.
The single biggest beginner gain is sound. The attack that switches your prayers off has its own audio cue, and without it you will only find out when your next hit lands unprotected.
Solo Versus Team
The Gauntlet is solo only, in both variants. There is no team mode and no scaling.
Its structure makes it the most bank-independent boss in the game, which is why it is such a strong option for Ironmen and for accounts that have levels but not gear.
For the boss fight itself in isolation, see the Corrupted Hunllef guide; for the easier variant, see the Crystalline Hunllef guide.
Common Mistakes and What Actually Kills You
Gauntlet failures are almost always prep failures that only become visible during the boss fight.
- Wandering the maze instead of following a route toward resources.
- Crafting full armour and arriving with almost no food.
- Only crafting one weapon, then being unable to switch styles.
- Standing still during tornadoes to land extra hits.
- Tracking your own style switches but not the Hunllef's.
- Spending all food and prayer before the enraged phase.
- Attempting the Corrupted variant before normal Gauntlet feels routine.
- Staying in a run that prep already lost, instead of teleporting out and resetting.
Drops Worth Knowing
The Gauntlet's reward chest scales with how well the run went, and the Corrupted variant has better odds on the item everyone wants.
| Drop | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Enhanced crystal weapon seed | Becomes the blade of saeldor or bow of faerdhinen — the reason most people run Corrupted. |
| Crystal armour seeds | Craft into crystal helm, body and legs for the ranged crystal set. |
| Crystal weapon seed | The lower-tier weapon seed. |
| Crystal shards | Bulk reward used across elf-area content and for charging crystal gear. |
| Youngllef | The pet. |

Combat Achievements
Gauntlet Combat Achievements reward exactly what makes runs consistent: completing the fight without taking tornado damage, finishing with restrictions on armour or food, and clearing under time pressure.
Because the Gauntlet costs nothing to attempt, these tasks are unusually cheap to grind compared with raid or Inferno achievements.
Ironman Notes
The Gauntlet is arguably the single best boss in the game for an Ironman, because it requires zero banked gear. Everything you fight with is crafted inside the instance from resources you gather there.
That makes it available far earlier in an iron's progression than any comparable reward, and the blade of saeldor or bow of faerdhinen it can produce are genuine endgame weapons.
The practical requirement is skilling levels, not gear. If your gathering and crafting levels are low, spend the time there first — it pays off directly in prep speed.
FAQ
What do I need for the Corrupted Gauntlet?
Song of the Elves, and nothing else. You bring no gear in; everything is crafted inside the instance.
Should I do normal Gauntlet or Corrupted first?
Normal, until prep and the Hunllef fight feel routine. Corrupted has the same structure with a much stronger boss.
Why do I keep dying to the Hunllef with full armour?
Almost always because you ran out of food, or because you never switched your own attack style and the Hunllef built resistance. Armour is the lowest-priority craft.
How many weapons should I craft?
At least two, in different styles, for the Corrupted variant. One weapon means the Hunllef becomes very resistant partway through the fight.
Do I lose anything if I fail?
Only the time. You bring nothing in and lose nothing on death, which is why the Gauntlet is such a low-risk boss to learn.
Is the Gauntlet good for GP?
The enhanced seed is extremely valuable, but the run-to-run income is modest. Treat it as a targeted grind for a specific weapon rather than a GP method.

Bottom Line
The Gauntlet is a preparation boss. Route your gathering, craft weapons and food before armour, and enter the arena with two attack styles available.
In the fight, track both switching rules — the Hunllef's style for your prayer, and your own style for its resistance — and never stop moving.
It costs nothing to attempt, so the only real way to get better at it is to run it. If the enhanced seed is a blocker for a build, our PvM team can grind it hand-done.
