OSRS Ranged Guide 1–99: Fastest XP, Best Weapons and AFK Methods — Bils Services

Ranged 1–99 guide covering chins, toxic blowpipe, bow progression, AFK crab methods, and gear breakpoints for PvM.

Why Ranged 1–99 Still Matters

Bils Services offers hand-done Ranged training if you would rather outsource the grind. This article stays educational first — use the service link only if it fits your plan.

We have not put XP per hour or supply costs in this guide. Ranged rates move whenever Jagex adjusts a method, and the cost of the ranged supplies below moves with the Grand Exchange — a frozen number here would mislead you into budgeting the wrong bank. The OSRS Wiki carries live figures.

Ranged 1-99 OSRS

Ranged 1–99 Level Path

Ranged breaks into 5 stages between level 1 and 99. Start at "1–50: quests + bone/ coif progression" and read the list as a default rather than a rule — if your goal is fastest XP rather than AFK, the later stages are where you should deviate.

  1. 1–50: quests + bone/ coif progression
  2. 50–75: broad bolts / MSB / early BP goals
  3. 75: Toxic blowpipe era for many accounts
  4. 80–90+: armadyl/crystal/bowfa / tbow contexts
  5. Chinning in Ape Atoll dungeon for fastest XP when funded

Weapons, Ammunition and the Cape Slot

Ranged is the one combat skill where your ammunition bill can outweigh your weapon, so the cape slot and the choice of thrown weapon matter as much as the bow.

  • Equipment
    Ava's assembler
    What it changes
Requires 70 Ranged. Saves 80% of your ammunition against the accumulator's 72%, and never drops the rest on the floor
  • Equipment
    Toxic blowpipe
    What it changes
Attack speed 3 against monsters, the same as darts, with two extra squares of attack range. Consumes both darts and Zulrah's scales
  • Equipment
    Chinchompas
    What it changes
Thrown, and explode on impact across a 3x3 area. They cannot be picked back up, even on a miss
  • Equipment
    Bows and crossbows
    What it changes
Cheaper per hour than charged weapons, and the ammunition is recoverable when a cape saves it

That 8% gap between the assembler and the accumulator sounds small until you multiply it by an hour of blowpipe darts, which is why the cape is usually the first Ranged upgrade worth buying.

Fastest XP Methods

Red chins at skeletons (Ape Atoll) is the famous XP nuke — expensive and intense.

Blowpipe on solid tasks is the practical fast path.

Venator bow / multi targets change some metas — verify current best.

Cheapest / Budget Approach

MSB + broad bolts / cheap ammo for early levels.

Do not chin if it bankrupts your raid fund.

AFK crabs with cheap knives/darts for budget levelling.

AFK & Lower-Intensity Options

Ammonite/sand crabs with cheap ammo are AFK Ranged.

Some Slayer tasks are AFK with proper safespots.

AFK to a weapon breakpoint, then use real ammo on real content.

Practical Tips That Actually Matter

  • Ranged void vs armadillo/blessed d’hide depends on content — learn both.
  • Anguish → Necklace of Rupture (Maggot King era) is a major upgrade path when available.
  • Assembler / ava’s device is mandatory QoL.

Ironman Notes

Ranged is the most ammunition-hungry skill on an Ironman. Arrows, bolts and darts all have to be made or dropped for you, which usually means Fletching and Smithing come along for the ride whether you planned it or not.

That dependency is worth front-loading. A stock of ammunition you can make yourself is what turns Ranged from a stop-start grind into something you can train whenever you want.

When Paid Training Makes Sense

The case for buying Ranged rests on what it is blocking. It is a combat skill, so the levels are a gate on content rather than a number on a page. The question is whether the bosses or quests behind it are what you actually want, and whether the levels themselves would have been any fun.

If you do order it, the thing to specify is the route as well as the level range: fastest XP and weapons and AFK are different jobs on this skill, with different timelines and different supply bills for the same 99. Our Ranged page lists what we need from you, and the work is played rather than botted.

FAQ

When should I chin?

When you can afford it and will use the levels immediately for PvM goals.

Bowfa or BP?

Different roles. BP for many DPS niches; Bowfa for crystal armor setups and specific bosses.
