OSRS Sins of the Father Guide: Vanstrom Klause Strategy

Sins of the Father unlocks Darkmeyer, the Hallowed Sepulchre and the blisterwood flail, and it ends with Vanstrom Klause — a fight with three rotating specials and an enrage phase that ignores prayer. Here is the full strategy.
Overview
Sins of the Father is the fifth Myreque quest and one of the best value quests in the game for its length. It is rated Master rather than Grandmaster, takes four unboostable skills in the 50s and 60s, and unlocks Darkmeyer, the Daeyalt Essence Mine, the Hallowed Sepulchre, the blisterwood flail and a tome of experience worth six lots of 15,000 XP.
The quest itself is a stealth-and-escort story: follow Carl through Slepe unseen, escort Ivan Strom to Burgh de Rott, infiltrate Darkmeyer in a scented vyre noble disguise, and hydrate the Blisterwood tree so you can build the weapon that lets you hurt Vanstrom.
Vanstrom Klause is the part people come here for. The Wiki describes him as far beyond normal Master difficulty, he can hit through prayers, and rings of recoil, Vengeance and thralls all do nothing. The fight is entirely learnable, but only if you know his three specials before you walk in.

One direct prerequisite, at the end of the Myreque chain:
- A Taste of Hope
- Behind it: Darkness of Hallowvale, In Aid of the Myreque, In Search of the Myreque, Vampyre Slayer
- And behind those: Nature Spirit, Priest in Peril, The Restless Ghost
Items to Bring
The flail is built during the quest, so bring the components. Efaritay's aid is not required but it is the single biggest difference-maker for Vanstrom.
Required
- Any axe, for the Blisterwood tree and the broken bridge during the escort
- A vyrewatch outfit (top, legs and shoes), or 1,950 coins to buy one from Trader Sven's Black-market Goods
- The Ivandis flail — the blisterwood flail is built from it
- A ruby, a knife and a chisel
- Runes for Lvl-3 Enchant — 1 cosmic and 5 fire — or an enchant ruby or topaz tablet
Recommended
- Efaritay's aid for Vanstrom: +15% accuracy and +10% damage against vampyres, clearly better than a berserker ring (i) here
- Piety, or Chivalry if your Prayer is lower
- Throwing knives or darts to kill the acidic bloodvelds at range — any quality one-shots them
- Karambwans for one-tick eating in the enrage phase, plus sharks or better
- An Attack-restoring potion, because he drains your Attack level
- Magic-defensive armour: eclipse moon, Karil's, black or blessed dragonhide, mixed hide or Void
- Super or divine super combat potion, super attack, and two to three prayer potions
- Drakan's medallion, ideally with a Slepey tablet, or 10,000 coins for Andras' boat to Slepe
- Morytania legs 3, a hammer or a wieldable axe, stamina potions and antipoison
Bank your pet before the escort or you cannot start the trek with Ivan Strom.
Where to Start
Talk to Veliaf Hurtz outside the church in Slepe. If he is not there, interact with him in the Burgh de Rott basement first and he will move.
The fastest way to Slepe is Drakan's medallion, or Andras' boat for 10,000 coins. Note that Darkmeyer's bank is not available until you finish the quest, though the altar south of it works.
Walkthrough, Stage by Stage
Fourteen stages. Two of them are stealth or escort sections that restart if you fail.
- In Slepe, Veliaf explains the Sleeper Plague. Talk to Hameln the Jester in the church, then Carl the barkeep at The Rat & Bat, and inspect the barrel behind the pub.
- Follow Carl through Slepe without being spotted, hiding behind scenery at four points. You overhear Damien Leucurte, Vanstrom Klause and Kroy discussing the Elixir of Everlasting mixed into bloody bracers. Then kill Kroy and destroy his two lab tables.
- Report to Veliaf, then Drezel at Paterdomus, then witness werewolves handing a family to Damien south of Fenkenstrain's Castle. Vanescula Drakan ambushes you and proposes killing her brother.
- Escort Ivan Strom from near Paterdomus to Burgh de Rott. Four fixed obstacles: a vine river crossing (knife and 3 vines), three nail beasts at levels 69 to 141, a broken bridge (chop logs, and you need a hammer or a wielded axe), and two Vampyre Juvinates that need the Ivandis flail.
- At the Icyene Graveyard, Safalaan promotes you to lieutenant and Vanescula lays out her plan. Solve the mausoleum puzzle to learn Safalaan is the half-icyene son of Queen Efaritay and King Ascertes, and that Ascertes became Vanstrom Klause.
- Get agreement from Ivan Strom, Vertida Sefalatis, Kael Forshaw, Radigad Ponfit and Polmafi Ferdygris, and speak to Veliaf last.
- In the Meiyerditch Laboratories with Safalaan, kill a Mutated Bloodveld then retrieve Haemalchemy volume 2 from the bookshelf behind two cages.
- Have Polmafi convert a vyrewatch outfit into an unscented vyre noble outfit.
- Kill Damien Leucurte in Crombwick Manor to scent the disguise with noble blood.
- Enter Darkmeyer through the crack in the southern wall. Bargain with Desmodus Lasiurus by chasing the Gadderanks slaves via Mordan Nikazsi and Lord Alexei Jovkai. Vanstrom nearly recognises you before Sarius Guile intervenes.
- In the Arboretum, read the old note and solve the water-valve puzzle to hydrate the Blisterwood tree, then chop eight blisterwood logs.
- Craft the blisterwood flail with Vertida: silver sickle from the crate plus a ruby makes a ruby sickle (b), Lvl-3 Enchant it, add blisterwood logs for a blisterwood sickle, then use that on the Ivandis flail. The enchanted emerald sickle (b) is returned to you.
- At Castle Drakan, Vanescula delivers the Myreque as prisoners. Lowerniel Drakan already knows and incinerates Polmafi, Kael, Vertida and Radigad, then orders Vanstrom to finish you. Fight Vanstrom Klause.
- Safalaan destroys Vanstrom with his icyene powers but is left behind. Veliaf declares the Myreque dead.
If you teleport out the instant Damien hits 0 hitpoints, your outfit stays unscented and vanishes after you speak to Vanescula. You can reclaim it from the Myreque base under Old Man Ral's house.
Puzzles and How They Work
Three challenges, none skippable, and two are randomised per player.
| Puzzle | Type | How it works |
|---|---|---|
| Following Carl | Stealth | Hide behind scenery at four points along his route through Slepe. Getting caught restarts the sequence. |
| Mausoleum door | Kakurasu-style number grid | Make the active blue and yellow numbered squares in each row and column sum to that row or column's target. The targets differ per player. Red flags are optional marking aids. |
| Arboretum water valves | Arithmetic | The note states a required number of gallons, different per player. The north valve sends 7 gallons per interval and the south valve sends 4, so you are solving 7n + 4s for the target. |

Boss Fights
Three fights, and the weapon restrictions matter more than the damage. Damien can only be hurt by the Ivandis flail, and Vanstrom only by the blisterwood flail in melee.
| Fight | Attacks with | Pray | What decides the fight |
|---|---|---|---|
| Kroy (level 133) | Melee and Magic | Protect from Magic — his melee hits for less | Any weapon works on him, so you can range and safespot behind the northern tables. He throws a weakening vial: watch for the vial in his hands or in flight, step aside, and avoid the puddle it leaves. |
| Damien Leucurte (level 204) | Ranged and Magic | Protect from Magic | Only harmable with the Ivandis flail. He periodically spreads magical fire around the room — stamp the fires out or he becomes increasingly resistant to your attacks. He can poison you. Veliaf helps but contributes very little damage. |
| Vanstrom Klause (level 459, Defence 180) | Magic that heals him, plus an Attack drain | Protect from Magic for all of phase 1, then drop it in phase 2 | Melee with the blisterwood flail only. Ring of recoil, Vengeance and thralls do nothing, and he can attack you from underneath him, so turn off Auto Retaliate. Two phases with completely different rules — see below. |

Vanstrom phase 1. His main attack is Magic that heals him for part of the damage dealt; Protect from Magic halves it. After an opening special that can come at any time, and then every nine to twelve regular attacks, he uses one of three specials — random the first time, then a fixed order, and none repeat until all three have been used. "My pets will feast on your corpse!" summons an acidic bloodveld that walks at you and explodes for 35 to 50 on contact; it is highly resistant to melee, so one-shot it with a thrown knife or dart and avoid the acid pool. It always spawns on whichever of the far north or south sides is further from you, so fight near one end to buy yourself time. "Stare into darkness!" darkens the screen and hits for 40+ unless you step one tile immediately — many players pre-emptively step after every regular attack because the window is unforgiving on high ping. "Blood will be my strength!" summons a blood orb that looks 1x1 but is actually 3x3 and boosts his magic damage even through Protect from Magic; lure him into it by running a wide arc around it, which hits him for 20+ and ends the buff.
Vanstrom phase 2, the enrage. At 0 hitpoints he teleports to the staircase and heals to 200. The phase 1 specials stop, but his attacks become typeless and ignore protection prayers, so you can drop Protect from Magic and keep Piety — Redemption is a reasonable safety net. Roughly every two seconds, ten to fifteen shadows mark tiles for a delayed lightning strike of up to 40 damage. Step one tile around him whenever your tile is marked, checking both your current tile and your destination. Keep karambwans for one-tick eating here. If the lightning shadows are hard to see, consider disabling the 117 HD plugin in RuneLite.
Rewards and Unlocks
The tome of experience was doubled from three uses to six in the 30 November 2022 poll update, which makes this quest considerably better value than older guides suggest.
| Reward | Detail |
|---|---|
| Quest points | 2 |
| Tome of experience | 15,000 XP to any skill at level 60+, usable six times, and it can be used on the same skill repeatedly |
| Blisterwood flail | +25% damage and +5% accuracy against vampyres, full damage to all vyre tiers |
| Travel | Darkmeyer teleport on Drakan's medallion, and boats between Burgh de Rott, Slepe and the Icyene Graveyard |
| Agility shortcuts | Long rope from the Darkmeyer General Store builds the 63 Agility eastern wall shortcut and the 91 Agility Viyeldi caves rocks with Legends' Quest |
| Rank | Lieutenant in the Myreque, with the associated title |

What it opens up
- Darkmeyer, including the Daeyalt Essence Mine
- The Hallowed Sepulchre, one of the better Agility and money-making activities in the game
- Vyrewatch Sentinels — combat level 151, 150 hitpoints, 38 Slayer — the main source of the blood shard. They can only be harmed by the Sunspear, hallowed flail, blisterwood sickle, Ivandis flail, blisterwood flail or blisterwood stakes
- The True Blood Altar with a blood talisman, and the Guardian of Blood in Guardians of the Rift
- Shopping at Darkmeyer stores while wearing vyre noble clothing
- The mutated bloodvelds section of the Meiyerditch Laboratories
Common Mistakes and Warnings
Almost all of these are documented warnings rather than things you would guess.
- Leaving items in the 50,000 coin deathbank between attempts. An unsafe death deletes them. Veliaf holds them at the Icyene Graveyard, and you do not need the coins on you.
- Activating potions after speaking to Veliaf. He sends you straight back in, so drink first.
- Leaving Auto Retaliate on for Vanstrom. He can attack from underneath himself, and both phases require you to step on specific ticks.
- Bringing no throwing weapon. The acidic bloodvelds resist melee heavily, and a single dart or knife one-shots them.
- Keeping Protect from Magic up in phase 2. His enrage attacks are typeless and ignore prayer, so the prayer points are better spent on Piety.
- Healing Ivan with purple sweets during the escort. He will eat the entire stack. Kill the juvinate in front of him first to keep him alive.
- Teleporting the moment Damien dies. Your outfit stays unscented and disappears; reclaim it from the Myreque base under Old Man Ral's house.
- Forgetting to bank your pet. You cannot start the trek with Ivan while it is following you.
- Relying on an amulet of blood fury. It helps a learner, but his off-prayer hits land hard enough that you should not build a plan around healing.
Ironman Notes
Sins of the Father is one of the highest-value quests on an Ironman account. The Hallowed Sepulchre gives Agility experience and loot at the same time, and the Daeyalt Essence Mine improves Runecraft rates substantially.
Vyrewatch Sentinels are the practical source of the blood shard, which combines with an amulet of fury. That is a meaningful upgrade an Ironman cannot simply buy.
The six-use tome of experience is flexible — you can put all six into the same skill. Hold it until you know which grind you least want to do.
FAQ
Can I fight Vanstrom Klause with Ranged or Magic?
No. He must be fought in melee with the blisterwood flail, which you build during the quest. Ring of recoil, Vengeance and thralls also do nothing to him.
Should I keep Protect from Magic on for the whole fight?
Only for phase 1, where it halves his healing attack. In the enrage phase his attacks become typeless and ignore protection prayers entirely, so the prayer is wasted.
Is Efaritay's aid worth bringing?
Yes, and it is the clearest single upgrade for this fight: +15% accuracy and +10% damage against vampyres, which comfortably beats a berserker ring (i) here.
How do I handle the blood orb special?
Do not step into it — it is a 3x3 area despite looking 1x1, and it costs up to 40 damage. Run a wide arc around it to lure Vanstrom in instead, which hits him for 20+ and ends the buff.
Does killing Vanstrom count for a Slayer task?
Black mask and Slayer helmet bonuses do apply on a Vampyre task, but the kill itself gives no Slayer experience and no task credit.
Is the Hallowed Sepulchre reason enough to do this quest?
For most accounts, yes. It is one of the better Agility methods in the game and it pays while you train, so the quest usually pays for itself quickly even ignoring Darkmeyer and the blood shard.

Bottom Line
Sins of the Father is short by Master standards and unlocks a disproportionate amount: Darkmeyer, the Hallowed Sepulchre, the Daeyalt mine, the blood shard and a six-use experience tome.
Vanstrom is the only real barrier, and he is beaten with knowledge rather than gear. Learn the three phase 1 specials, bring a dart for the bloodvelds, drop Protect from Magic in the enrage, and keep karambwans for the lightning phase.
If Vanstrom is where you keep dying, our quest service is hand-completed and we will not touch your bank beyond what the quest needs.
