OSRS Nex Guide: Frozen Key Access, Team Sizes, Phases and Best Gear — Bils Services

Nex explained properly: how the frozen key and Ancient Prison access work, all five phases and their minions, blood sacrifice and ice prison handling, team scaling, and Torva-tier drop context.

Overview

Nex is the Zarosian boss in the Ancient Prison beneath the God Wars Dungeon, and the most demanding team boss outside the raids. She fights through five distinct phases, each with its own minion and its own way of punishing a distracted team.

Nex is unusual because it is genuinely a team boss by design. Solo Nex exists and is impressive, but the encounter assumes multiple players covering different mechanics — and the drops reflect that: Torva armour and the zaryte crossbow are among the strongest non-raid items in the game.

This guide covers the frozen key access chain, the five phases and their mechanics, how team size changes the fight, gear at three budgets, and what to do when blood sacrifice or ice prison targets you.

Requirements and Access

Nex has a two-stage gate: you need God Wars Dungeon access, then you need the frozen key that opens the Ancient Prison.

Hard requirements
  • Requirement
    God Wars Dungeon access
    Detail
The standard GWD entry route, including the agility and strength obstacles on the way in.
  • Requirement
    Frozen key
    Detail
Assembled from four shards, one dropped by each of the four GWD generals. Only one player in a group needs the key to open the door.
  • Requirement
    70+ Prayer
    Detail
Protection prayers plus Rigour or Augury make a real difference across a long fight.
  • Requirement
A ranged setup and a magic switch
    Detail
Phases demand different styles, and minions are killed faster with the right option.
  • Requirement
    Teamwork or voice comms
    Detail
Blood sacrifice and ice prison are much easier when someone calls them.

Because only one key holder is needed, joining an existing Nex team is the normal way to start. Farming four shards yourself is a project in its own right — see the God Wars Dungeon guide.

Getting There

Nex sits behind the Ancient Prison door inside the God Wars Dungeon.

  1. Travel to the God Wars Dungeon entrance and descend through the standard obstacle route.
  2. Make your way to the Ancient Prison door in the main dungeon chamber.
  3. A player with a frozen key opens the door; the whole team can then enter.

Set up your return teleport before the trip. Nex fights are long, and a slow bank run between attempts wastes more time than the fight itself.

Recommended Stats

Nex is not a stat check in the way a solo boss is, but low stats make you the weak link in a team fight where mistakes are shared.

Suggested combat stats
  • Stat
    Ranged
    Comfortable
    85+
    Why
Your primary damage across most phases.
  • Stat
    Magic
    Comfortable
    80+
    Why
For the phases and minions where magic is the better option.
  • Stat
    Hitpoints
    Comfortable
    85+
    Why
Nex's damage output is high and mechanics stack.
  • Stat
    Prayer
    Comfortable
    74+
    Why
Rigour or Augury plus enough prayer to last a full kill.
  • Stat
    Defence
    Comfortable
    80+
    Why
Meaningful here because you cannot pray against everything simultaneously.

Gear Setups: Budget, Mid and Best in Slot

Ranged is the backbone with a magic switch for specific phases. Prayer bonus and survivability matter more than at a scripted solo boss, because Nex fights are long and mechanics overlap.

Bring a defensive switch. There are moments in the fight where surviving matters more than your damage contribution, particularly if you are the blood sacrifice target.

Inventory and Supplies

Nex trips are long and mechanic-heavy. Bring sustain rather than maximum damage, especially while learning.

  • Saradomin brews and super restores — the standard combination for long team fights.
  • Prayer potions if you are not using restores exclusively.
  • Ranging potion and magic potion, or divine variants.
  • Your magic switch and any defensive switch you plan to use.
  • Runes or a weapon capable of hitting minions efficiently.
  • An escape teleport.

Do not bring your entire bank. Nex demands attention on mechanics, and a cluttered inventory turns a switch into a misclick at the worst moment.

Mechanics You Have to Respect

Nex fights through four elemental phases, each guarded by a minion, before a final phase. Each phase introduces a mechanic that the whole team has to respect, and the mechanics do not stop just because someone else is the target.

Attacks and correct responses
  • Mechanic
Phase minions (Fumus, Umbra, Cruor, Glacies)
    What it does
Each phase is guarded by a minion that must be dealt with to progress.
    Correct response
Kill the phase minion promptly; leaving it alive stalls the fight and wastes supplies.
  • Mechanic
    Smoke phase
    What it does
Nex attacks with ranged and magic and applies effects that drain your ability to fight cleanly.
    Correct response
Keep the correct protection prayer up and stay grouped as the team expects.
  • Mechanic
    Shadow phase
    What it does
Nex darkens the arena and reduces your defensive effectiveness.
    Correct response
Expect higher incoming damage and keep your health topped up rather than sitting low.
  • Mechanic
    Blood phase — blood sacrifice
    What it does
A player is marked and must move away from Nex or she heals substantially.
    Correct response
If you are marked, run away from Nex immediately. Do not try to keep attacking.
  • Mechanic
    Ice phase — ice prison
    What it does
Players are frozen in place and take damage from surrounding ice.
    Correct response
Break out and reposition as fast as possible; do not stand in the ice while frozen if you can move.
  • Mechanic
    Final phase
    What it does
Nex uses her strongest attacks with no minion protecting her.
    Correct response
This is where saved supplies matter. Keep prayer correct and finish cleanly.
  • Mechanic
    Nihil minions
    What it does
Additional adds that add pressure during the fight.
    Correct response
Deal with them or have assigned players handle them; ignoring them compounds damage.

Nex's exact phase transitions, special timings and heal amounts are tuning-sensitive. Confirm current behaviour on the OSRS Wiki Nex page before a serious learning trip.

Phase-by-Phase Strategy

Nex is the same fight every time, in the same order. Learn the phase order first, then learn what each phase asks of you specifically.

  1. Before entering: dose your potions, set your protection prayer, and agree roles with the team.
  2. Smoke phase: kill Fumus, keep prayer correct, and stay in the position your team expects.
  3. Shadow phase: kill Umbra and expect more incoming damage; keep your health high rather than sipping late.
  4. Blood phase: kill Cruor, and if blood sacrifice marks you, run away from Nex immediately.
  5. Ice phase: kill Glacies, break out of ice prison promptly and reposition out of the ice.
  6. Final phase: this is where the fight is won or lost. Keep prayer correct and use the supplies you saved.
  7. Deal with nihil minions as they appear rather than letting them accumulate.
  8. After the kill, check supplies honestly before committing to another attempt.

If you are learning, ask your team to call blood sacrifice and ice prison out loud. Almost every new-learner death is a missed call rather than a mechanical failure.

Solo Versus Team

Nex scales with team size, and the encounter is designed around a team. More players means faster phases and shared mechanic pressure, but also more people who can make a mistake that costs the group.

Solo Nex is possible and is a genuine achievement, but it demands endgame gear and complete mechanical mastery. It is not a reasonable way to learn the boss.

Learning in a small team of experienced players is the fastest path. If you have nobody to learn with, joining an established group is normal — and the PvM services route exists if you want the drops without the learning curve.

Common Mistakes and What Actually Kills You

Nex punishes attention lapses, not bad gear. These are the errors that end learner trips.

  • Continuing to attack Nex while marked by blood sacrifice, healing her back up.
  • Standing in ice after being frozen instead of moving out.
  • Ignoring the phase minion and stalling the fight.
  • Letting nihil minions accumulate while focused on Nex.
  • Sitting at low health during Shadow phase, where incoming damage is higher.
  • Spending all supplies before the final phase.
  • Learning Nex solo instead of in a team.
  • Bringing a magic switch you never actually use because your inventory is cluttered.

Drops Worth Knowing

Nex's drop table is one of the strongest outside the raids, which is why the boss stays busy years after release.

Notable drops
  • Drop
    Torva armour (helm, platebody, platelegs)
    Why it matters
Best-in-slot melee armour for most content.
  • Drop
    Zaryte crossbow
    Why it matters
A top-tier ranged weapon, particularly with the right bolts.
  • Drop
    Ancient hilt
    Why it matters
    Combines into the ancient godsword.
  • Drop
    Nihil horn
    Why it matters
Used for the Zaryte crossbow upgrade path.
  • Drop
    Ancient ceremonial robes
    Why it matters
Cosmetic set pieces from the table.
  • Drop
    Nexling
    Why it matters
    The pet.

Combat Achievements

Nex Combat Achievements focus on mechanic discipline: not healing her via blood sacrifice, handling ice prison cleanly, and completing kills in smaller team sizes.

Small-team and solo tasks are the hardest tier here. Get comfortable with full-team kills first, then reduce the scale one player at a time.

Ironman Notes

Nex is a major Ironman milestone because Torva and the zaryte crossbow cannot be bought. For an iron, this boss is the melee armour endgame.

The frozen key requirement is the real Ironman problem: you need shards from all four GWD generals, which means a substantial God Wars project before you can even enter.

Because trips are long and supply-heavy, stockpile brews and restores before starting rather than farming between attempts. The Ironman equipment progression guide covers where Nex fits in the wider order.

FAQ

How do I get into the Ancient Prison?

You need a frozen key, assembled from four shards dropped by the four God Wars Dungeon generals. Only one player in a team needs the key to open the door.

Can I solo Nex?

Yes, but it requires endgame gear and full mechanical mastery. It is not a sensible way to learn the boss — start in a team.

What is blood sacrifice?

During the blood phase Nex marks a player. That player must move away from her, or she heals a significant amount. If you are marked, stop attacking and run.

How do I deal with ice prison?

Break out and move away from the ice as quickly as you can. Staying frozen in the ice is where most of the avoidable damage in that phase comes from.

What team size is best?

Larger teams make phases faster and spread mechanic pressure, which is why learners should start bigger. Smaller teams give better personal loot odds but demand much cleaner play.

Is Nex harder than the raids?

Mechanically Nex is comparable to a raid boss, but it is one fight rather than a sequence. Many players find Nex easier to learn than a full raid, and harder than any single GWD general.

Bottom Line

Nex is a five-phase team fight with two mechanics that decide everything: run when blood sacrifice marks you, and get out of the ice when it freezes you.

Kill each phase minion promptly, keep your health high during Shadow phase, and save supplies for the final phase where the fight is actually decided.

Learn it in a team, not solo. If Torva or the zaryte crossbow is the goal and you have nobody to learn with, our PvM team runs it hand-done.
